Postmaster urges early mailing for holiday season

Postmaster Lowell Hanson asks the public to mail early as about 9 billion pieces of holiday mail were handled last year. Deadlines include Dec 1 for 5 pound or less gifts to armed forces abroad, Dec 11 for air mail gifts, Dec 4 and Dec 10 for distant state gifts and greeting cards, and Dec 19 for domestic air mail. Osceola Post Office will stay open until 5 PM on Dec 9 and Dec 16.

Judge outlines duties and juvenile focus at Lions Club

Eldon R. Johnson spoke to Osceola Lions Club on his county judge duties. He noted juvenile work consumes much of his time and mentioned other lesser seen job aspects. Dick Howe led the meeting and topics included the ACP handbook street signs and related plans. Osceola December plans include Santa, movie and drawings

Osceola Chamber outlines December events for shoppers with Santa visits and an Oxco 67 drawing on December 2 at 3 30 p m near the courthouse. If interest grows a Polk County Old Times Day soap box derby is planned for June 1 with two age group contests and prizes. Polk County boys 8 11 and 11 16 are invited to participate and must contact Martin Roberts by January 15 for details.

Hospital report lists patients by name across Stromsburg Osceola Benedict Gresham and York with several discharged. Christmas plans at the Good Samaritan Home urge donations of non-perishable gifts to be placed under the center tree early. A 2 p.m. Friday December 22 party will host residents families and friends with gift unwrapping and carols.

Centennia l Festivities Close Grand Island Centennial Spectacular

Grand Island marked the closing century event with a Centennial Spectacular at the Senior High School auditorium. 21 counties joined the program with Master of Ceremonies Que Dahlstedt of Grand Island and Polk County 4 H queen Katherine Lux of Osceola presenting. The program featured the Country Cousins 4 H Club, guests Governor and Mrs. Tiemann, and the unveiling of local historical markers and museum tours.

Rainfall for the week ending Saturday was trace. Surface and subsoil moisture were adequate. Winter wheat condition fair, other crops good. Corn 90 percent harvested, sorghums and soybeans 98 percent. Moisture 14 to 22 percent. Feed supplies average or above. Main farm work is corn harvest. corn remains wet. All livestock doing well.
