C. O. Johnson was appointed food administrator for Polk County by state official G. W. Wattles. He will organize precincts, appoint local monitors, and ensure compliance with food administration laws. Johnson brings wide county connections and a businesslike approach to the demanding post.
The food administration will prosecute individuals who hoard foodstuffs by buying supplies beyond sixty days use or sugar above two weeks supply. Selling sugar in 100 pound lots is condemned, with joint liability for buyers and sellers. Mail order houses shipping into the state will be prosecuted, and violators to face strict enforcement.
The United States department of agriculture warns a large amount of soft corn arriving at major Midwest grain markets faces spoilage risk due to terminal congestion. Railroads cannot promptly ship corn to drying plants, leaving it vulnerable during warm weather while held in trade.
