Osceola hosts County Government Day drawing high school students from four Polk County schools. Sponsored by the American Legion and supported by the legal profession and county officials, the event aims to educate youth about voting and civic life amid a 1977 success appraisal by officials.
A meditation on gratitude cites Elsa Lanchester hosting soldiers in Los Angeles and recording names in a Soldiers Book, then praying for each return. It urges readers to thank God for sight hearing walking and nourishment, notes Guatemala ties, and invites church attendance on Thanksgiving Day. Father Edward Valasek of St. Vincent Church signs off.
OHS senior Eric Henderson was named to the Class C-1 all state offense team by the Omaha World Herald Lincoln Journal and Star and Grand Island Independent. Henderson also made the Goldenrod East Division All Conference on offense and defense. Other OHL players named to the All Conference lists include Randy Reese Scott Conkling Lyndon Wieseman Todd Hiemer Duane Tenniges and Joe Graham. Goldenrod girls volleyball honors include Paula Smith on the East Division first team and Brenda Peterson on the second team.
Residents of Swede Haven joined the Polk County Historical Society for a November 17 business meeting and hobo party in Swede Haven. Hostesses Mildred Flodman and Myrtle Anderson led activities with readings, piano and mouthharp numbers. Prizes for best dressed hobos went to Arthur Senkbeil, his wife, and Myrtle Anderson.
Noxious Weed Club and Boy Scout Troop 162 announce paper recycling pickup this Saturday November 26 at 1 p.m. Housefront or porch bundles will be collected. downtown businesses may place papers at the curb for collection.
WIFE members from Madison Clarks and Polk County gathered November 17 in Osceola to hear reports on farm economics. KHAS Channel 5 filmed the meeting while Ardath Hayes announced a federal hearing in Scottsbluff November 22.
Osceola begins its seventh year of wrestling under Coach Jon Habben with 16 wrestlers including state contenders Ray Johnson and Tracy Day. Returning lettermen are Eric Henderson Ray Johnson Duane Tenniges Tracy Day Corky Clif ford Tim Bachenberg, with newcomers Mike Bryan Greg Rempe Keith Wieseman Pat Wieseman and Dean Runquist. Season opens December 3 at Lakeview with a double dual, then December 8 at home vs David City Aquinas, followed by meets at Fuller ton Clarks Stromsburg Palmer Hebron Wymore and East Butler and tournaments at Clarks Stromsburg and Goldenrod Conference at Fullerton.
Polk County ASC chair Richard Sealey Jr says the 1978 feed grain program requires a 10 percent set aside on corn sorghum and barley with voluntary participation but loss of price support loans for non participants. The plan aims to curb production and adjust stocks amid ample world and domestic supplies.
Clarence Jones of Silver Creek won second place in the Armchair Quarterback football contest with 11 correct predictions. Tied for second are Carolyn Wieseman Joel Carlson and Craig Baker with ten correct. Upsets occurred and few contestants predicted all games accurately. Scores listed include Minnesota 13 Wisconsin 7 and Memphis State 28 Wichita State 14.
One hundred ten seniors from Polk County high schools attended the 1977 County Government Day Program. Attorneys Alan Gless and Ron Colling organized the event which started at 10 a.m. on November 16 in the district courtroom at Osceola. The day included a mock trial demonstration, a courthouse tour, a noon lunch served by Polk Auxiliary members, and group visits to county offices before a history briefing back in the district courtroom.
