Victory Garden Corner Mulching Guidelines For Early Season

Soluble nitrates have leached from the soil due to snows and heavy rains. As soil warms, nitrates will be replaced by soil bacteria. Mulches keep soil cool, so delay mulch this year until plants reach 3 to 4 inches high. Do not mulch tomatoes peppers or eggplants for a month after setting out. Weeds pose a challenge. tackle them early before they overwhelm you.
