A local community is shaken by the sudden death of John Irland who died by self inflicted gunshot. Neighbors heard a gun blast after six PM as he stood at the front of the house and used a stick to trigger the weapon. He died instantly in the yard behind the home. Funeral plans are on hold awaiting word from his son in Canada.
John Leslie Irland born March 24 1854 in Geoga Ohio died April 29 1924 aged 70 years 1 month 5 days. He married Harriet I Wilkerson January 2 1881 and moved from Fremont Iowa to Polk County February 15 1887. They had six children George L Ira I Lola E Lottie M Harry L Jessie P and nineteen grandchildren. He leaves two sisters E J Leslie Argonia Kansas and Alice Fast Burlington Missouri and two brothers Geo Trind Dodge Center Minnesota and Harry Irland Jamison Iowa.
Spanish American War Veterans announce a state encampment in Lincoln on June 12 13 and 14. Dewey Shaw a committee member urges all Nebraska veterans to plan early to attend.
Congressman M O McLaughlin says the War Department seeks a representative group aged 17 to 24 from the district to take part in Citizens Military Training Camps. Courses cover military, physical, athletic, and mental training with ample recreation. All expenses including transportation, food, uniforms, and medical care are provided. Contact the congressman for information.
Friday visits and Sunday calls mark the social stretch around Green's Chapel with Frank Berggren and Swan Larson visiting Knerr while Viola Knerr and Hannah Anderson from Stromsburg traveled to C. B. Knerr home. D S Powell bought a 4 door Ford sedan last week. Horton McKeag underwent appendicitis surgery in York hospital Saturday and is recovering. family visits followed. Mrs Savage learned of her mother’s Iowa death and left for home with family.
Old fashioned camphor witch hazel and other compounds are mixed in Lavoptik eye wash to strengthen weak or strained eyes. The product promises quick relief and includes an aluminum eye cup at no extra charge from Crouse-Tex Drug Company.
The Shelby hotel with eighteen rooms and a store room was sold Monday at auction bid in by D. C. Cole of Shelby State Bank. Nebraska Realty Auction Co. organized sale for former owner John Larson. High bid reached 1 005 dollars. Col A W Thompson conducted the sale. Cole has not announced plans for the property.
The Junior-Senior banquet was held at Rathbun hall in Shelby. The elaborate program titled The Storm featured creative toasts and themed items, with Juniors and Seniors served by underclassmen. Notable toasts included The Storm by toast master John Dunning and forecasts by James Lockard.
H C Beebe traveled to York to represent heirs to the Wim Feethergill estate who live in England under direction of the British consul. The estate of the late William Feethergill, a wealthy farmer from Gresham, is valued at 40 to 50 thousand dollars with about 11 thousand dollars in U S bonds. The dispute pits a local nephew against several Feethergill siblings in England over rightful inheritance and Beebe protects the English heirs.
The Houston club's three departments met at Mrs J J Merrick's home. Illness kept Willam Hetzman from speaking. Delegates reported on the Aurora district convention. The literature department hosted. Committees were named to seek debate and declamatory courses, and to prize summer reading for students.
Mrs V A Newcomer will host socials this week and next at her Osceola home. The first gathering Friday May 2 at 8 p m brings Osceola faculty and city young ladies together for an evening of enjoyment. Next week will feature Kensingtons on Monday Wednesday and Friday afternoons.
The Merry Workers will gather Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church with Mesdames Van Vlack Ball and Dearborn serving as hostesses.
The Ladies Aid will meet at the M. E. church Friday afternoon with Mrs. R. G. Douglas as hostess assisted by Mesdames H. E. Fleming Alec Mustard Lillian McBeth Albert Zang Anna Ludlow and Albert Ryan.
Mrs. Sam Crouse will entertain the group Entre Nous next Wednesday afternoon. The event promises a refined social gathering with light conversation and refreshments.
CN chapter of the P. E. O. Sisterhood will meet Monday afternoon with Mrs. F. H. Ball. This will be guest day for the organization. A Mothers Day program will be given under the direction of Mrs. Earl Hassler.
Mrs C A Olson plans a Wednesday afternoon social with the Gab a Lots group, inviting members to join in a casual afternoon event.
The Monday Night Club will convene at the Presbyterian church next Monday evening. The committee in charge consists of Mr and Mrs Geo Craven, Mr and Mrs John Fillman, and Mr and Mrs H C Duncan.

The event promises an excellent program with prominent speakers and music and a big basket dinner. Local stores may close part of the day to accommodate the county-wide gathering.
May Day exercises scheduled in Osceola and Stromsburg with elaborate ceremonies. Stromsburg crowned Evalyn Lunner May Queen. Osceola program on M. A. Mills lawn features pantomime prologue, dances, and displays from grades including high school acts and a Maypole finale. Processions planned for 2 30 p.m. and 3 p.m. start with expected large crowds.
Andrew O Colson 72 died of heart failure Saturday afternoon at his brother John Colson’s home in Stromsburg after going to the barn to tend a horse. A longtime Park County resident he was born in Smaland Sweden and immigrated in 1879. He leaves a son Harry, a brother John, and a sister in Sweden. Funeral Tuesday at the Free Mission church with Rev Lindquist in charge.

Republican and Democratic conventions met in Osceola last Thursday afternoon. About sixty Republican delegates elected for the state convention, with R. Jones and F. J. Strain among others. Democratic delegates chose a county committee and delegates to the state convention. both parties planned to attend the state gatherings today in Lincoln and Omaha respectively.
The Osceola band leads off the season with a public concert next Wednesday night May 7 at 8 15. L R Israel and the ensemble have prepared a varied program including Warrar Overture The Admiral Russell March Pick of All Caprice A Kitten In The Catnip Dusty Trombone Eisenburg La Paloma and The Star Spangled Banner.
The Junior Senior banquet was held Tuesday at Scott's hall with a garden theme. Eldon Hubbert presided as toastmaster and a series of toasts followed including The Gardener and The Leaves. The dinner was served by the domestic science girls under Mrs Bitnerx, and the program was praised. a Senior Junior reception is planned for Friday night.
