Nebraska State Historical Society research using cigar box labels shows Nebraska’s first cigar maker in 1857 1858 with West and Fristscher in Omaha and Philip Dueser in Brownville. By 1884 nearly 5 million cigars were produced yearly in Omaha, with firms like Waltemade Wolf and Saeger & Sons contributing significant output into the early 1900s. World War I era saw decline, though some firms such as Kipp Cigar Company persisted until recently. New library books listed at Osceola Public Library accompany the feature.
