Charlotta Townsend born in Ohio in 1822 moved to Iowa in 1862 and married Richard O. D. Cummings, a Civil War soldier. She served as a nurse in the field, later moved to Nebraska, homesteaded near Shelby in 1871, suffered paralysis for years, and died March 16, 1903 at the Soldiers Home in Grand Island. Burial rites were at Osceola with Rev. Mailley of the 1st Nebraska ministering. Her husband and son predeceased her. she leaves two Iowa brothers and several relatives.
