Immense Task of Soil Rebuilding Faces Farm Managers

Farmers face a historic soil rebuilding job after World War II as wartime crop goals drained fertility. Estimates run well above prior fertilizer outlays, with erosion, fertilizer removal, and land mismanagement threatening 50 million ruined acres among 600 million tillable acres. Individual farmers must fund replenishment, aided by soil experts and state colleges, to restore productivity for peace.

Nitrogen Boosts Hay Yield And Earlier Pasture Growth

Dr. D H Dodd of Ohio State University reports that applying 60 pounds of nitrogen per 175 pounds per acre of ammonium nitrate to timothy and similar forages by April 1 yields about one extra ton of 6 to 9 protein hay. Nitrogen also advances pasture to grazing two to three weeks earlier, producing 700 to 1,000 pounds more forage per acre with 175 to 250 pounds protein per acre on a dry basis. Adding 20 to 30 pounds of nitrogen with phosphorus or potash in a first treatment could raise first year returns 50 to 75 percent.
