Lions Club Charter Night in Osceola February 27
The newly formed Lions Club of Osceola held its charter presentation Feb 27 at the Methodist Church basement with about 75 attendees. Bernie Gissler received the charter from Lyle B. Hawkins on behalf of District Governor Pete Lakers. Twenty four charter members exist, seventeen attended along with guests and wives, as the club plans a talent show on March 19.

The Osceola Gas Company provides a weekly temperature report using Degree Days. The past month from 2-4-57 to 3-3-57 shows 1957 with 923 DD and 9.8 percent warmer than 1956. Heating season totals to date show 4613 DD and 8.6 percent warmer than last year. Average temperatures from September 4 to March 3 range around 32 degrees in 1957 and 29.5 degrees in 1956.

Corn Acreage Reserve Sign-up Deadline Date
The Polk County ASC Committee notes March 8 1957 as the final date to execute 1957 corn acreage reserve agreements. The maximum entry remains 20 acres or 30 percent of the corn allotment, whichever is larger, not to exceed the allotment. The same date also applies to amending terminating or altering 1957 acreage reserve agreements.

More than 60 percent of Nebraska’s new irrigation wells last year were in 14 south-central counties. Eugene Reed reported at the Nebraska Water Conference that York led with 344 wells, followed by Dawson and Hamilton. The year end survey shows over 4,000 new wells, bringing total wells to more than 19,000 and irrigated land to about 2 million acres.
