Nebraska reports over 20 000 4-H members, 126 000 acres grown, 9 425 000 poultry birds, 1 250 000 head of livestock cared for, and 10 million quarts stored. A Polk County Soil Conservation District meeting March 10 features Dr. T M McCalla on soil organisms and fertility, plus a film Valley of Still Waters. Lunch provided by the Chamber of Commerce. all welcome.

Ak-Sar-Ben Donates to Nebraska County Fairs
Polk County received one of the first Ak-Sar-Ben checks totaling 500 dollars for a statewide program of permanent improvements. Ak-Sar-Ben Governor Jess L Thurmond said the mailings are part of a broader financial aid effort for Nebraska county fairs, supplementing about 75 thousand dollars yearly for premiums. County Fair Managers praised the help and officials outlined plans to enlarge and modernize a Fair Grounds building.

Osceola Smorgasbord Draws Record Crowd Over 1000 Attendees
The St Paul Church smorgasbord in the Osceola school auditorium drew just over 1000 guests, the largest ever for the event which now attracts visitors from as far as Omaha Lincoln Grand Island and Broken Bow. Victor Anderson of Lincoln former mayor and governor candidate attended as guest of Mr and Mrs W H Pierce.

Brainard Repeats In District Class C Basketball Tourney
Brainard defends its district Class C basketball title at Osceola with a dominant four game run. Brainard totaled 287 points to 152 for opponents, beating Clarks 66 to 43 in the final while Stromsburg took third with 84 to 55 over Wolbach. Attendance reached 3384 total over four days, with 1308 on final night, and receipts $1903.25. Tournament director C. W. Walker of Osceola presented trophies between games.

Red Cross Budget for 1954 Released and Appeals Planned
The Red Cross budget for the current year totals 3680 dollars, down from 3838 in 1953. County chairwoman Mrs S D Ivins releases the figures noting blood and home services as costly programs and March is Red Cross month proclaimed by the president. Residents are asked to support the quota growth soon. The budget lists Home Service 500, Nursing 25, Blood 1200, Swim 310, Food 10, Jr Red Cross 10, Vets Gifts 90, Public Info 15, Admin 100, Misc 40, Supplies 100, National and International 1280. LaVerne Richards appears on the Dean's Honor Roll of Nebraska Wesleyan.

State Engineer L N Ross announces sealed bids due March 4 1954 for 11 1 miles of paved road west of Osceola to Highway 30 Construction must start by May 3 and finish within 160 working days The project uses the sufficiency rating system and is funded by increased revenue from the one cent gasoline tax urged to be extended by the 1955 Legislature session.

Glenn Grant Shelmadine born July 15 1895 near Osceola Nebraska died February 26 1954 in Sargent Nebraska at age 58 years seven months 11 days He married Esther V Wieseman on September 25 1917 and they had five children He served in the US Army Field Artillery in 1918 later ran a Silver Creek grocery for 19 years moved to Kearney for his children then to Broken Bow as a salesman for Donald Company He was a member of the Eastern Star Masonic Lodge Silver Creek Past Master American Legion and Broken Bow Methodist Church.
