Polk County Boy in the Service of Uncle Sam

Allan Deeter, 18, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Deeter, took boat training at the Great Lakes Training Center after enlisting December 30 1944. He is now stationed at San Bruno California. Osceola editor on Bob Hawk program W J Herbes of The Osceola Record was interviewed on the Thanks To The Yanks Camel Cigarette radio program aired over KFAB. He was awarded 2000 Camels sent to a Navy relative in Texas.

Servicemen Attend Osceola Chamber Meeting

At the Osceola Chamber of Commerce monthly gathering Major Wm. A. Herrmann Lt. Eugene Johnson Lt. Samuel A. Byers all of the army air corps Lt. M. A. Mills Jr navy air corps and Pvt. Eugene Gondringer infantry were present. Lt. Johnson and Pvt. Gondringer recently returned from Nazi prison camps. Lloyd A. Timm recently returned from 1134 days as a Jap prisoner also attended. During the session the chamber purchased 500 of series E Bonds.

Examinations for New Shelby Postmaster

An open competitive examination to fill the vacancy of postmaster in Shelby has been announced by the United States Civil Service Commission at the request of the Postmaster General. Full information and applications are available at Shelby post office or from the Civil Service Commission in Washington. Applications must be on file by July 12, 1945.

New Airplane Tire Lots Offered for Civil Use

Thousands of veteran airplane tires returned from Europe, covering about half of all sizes, will be sold to tire manufacturers wholesalers and dealers through sealed bids by the Office of Surplus Property Department of Commerce. The tires once equipped transports in Germany Burma and Africa may roll onto trucks tractors combines and horse drawn vehicles.

The highway filling station north of Osceola formerly run by Jim Gibbins is back in business after two years. New owners Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Swanagan arrive from Detroit where he worked for the city and have spent weeks cleaning and improving the site for a fresh opening. Portland Woman Visits Osceola Sister in Hospital

Mrs. Fred Olmstead of Portland arrived in Osceola in the latter part of last week to be with her sister Mrs. Augusta Mills who is still confined to the hospital after a recent stroke. Mr and Mrs Ivan Mills of Bartlettsville Oklahoma, who had stayed with his mother, left for home Friday. They expect to move Mrs Mills by ambulance to Bartlettsville on Thursday.
