Osceola business places will close Saturday afternoon and evening July 3 to celebrate. The town will not hold its own festivities this year but Stromsburg plans a monster celebration. Businesses will stay open Friday evening July 2 instead. A Friday band concert and special bargains are planned with full details to appear in The Record next week.
A Friday twilight baseball game saw the single men defeat the married men 12 to 6. The favorable evening and nonwork-hour timing boost fan turnout, with plans to schedule regular Friday games if enthusiasm persists. The writer notes married men are rapidly building a competitive team.
June 30 ends filing for candidates for the August 10 primary. Secretary of State C. W. Pool warns filings must close by midnight June 30 to leave 40 days before the election. Also reports on local society notices, church activities, farming work, and community events.
The Father Flanagan's Boys Home radio tour stops in Fremont and will soon reach Osceola Nebraska. The group performs daily with free admission and a parade before the 4 p.m. show for children and an 8:15 p.m. adults only performance. An essay contest with bird houses as prizes runs via WOAW through July 7.
Parents must file for free high school tuition with the county superintendent by July 1 1926. Many application cards remain to be returned and failure to submit will forfeit the tuition privilege. I. D. Huston, County Superintendent.
The families of D. H. Kunkel and Frank Anderson drove to Camp Sheldon Sunday and visited Chas King, grandson of the Kunkels, who is spending vacation at the Boys Camp.
Miss Pauline Goodale of Lincol is spending a couple of weeks with her sister Mrs. Clyde Smith.
Miss Hattie Hannell sails for Denver and Colorado Springs for a vacation. Mrs. G. B. Hotchkiss, ill health, seeks votes in the Model Shoe Store contest. Relatives from Bird City and Hendley attend Spencer Query funeral. Archie Hereford and E. E. Carnard Jr. tour Harry Musselman’s home. Carnard artists display pastel paintings. Frank Malek deserts on a 5,000 mile coast trip in a 1920 Dodge with 90,000 mile motor. Miss Scephia Kresha joins 60 friends celebrating Mr. and Mrs. Kolar’s birthdays and Sioux City plane stunts. Mrs. Joel Bowser observes 80th birthday with six neighbors. dinner by Mrs. Bowser, Mrs. Bond, and Ruth Bowser.
Maple Leaf Club met at Mary Miller's home June 3 with 11 members and 3 visitors. They voted to meet June 20 with Mrs. Tessie Dunn for a picnic and basket dinner. About 75 attended the social at Lew Miller's on June 10, raising around $30 for a fairgrounds building. Next meeting will be with Mrs. Ella Wisely on July 22.
Last Thursday evening the Order of the Royal Neighbors of America admitted a class of 14 members, the largest in some time. Candidates included Mrs Matilda Anderson Esther Schenck Mrs Edith Jane Taylor Mrs Hagel Williams Mrs Vera Burke Mrs Florence Iler Mrs Maurine Schuman Mrs Geralyn Walrath Bennett and Misses Ada Ryan Lena Scholz Irene Dixon Dorothea Dix on Fern Timm Helea Adah Taylor. A banquet followed at Becks Cafe.
Stoner Club met with Mrs Hazel Randall on June 16 with Mrs Stella Parks assisting after the business meeting. A lunch followed and the group notes the ice cream social at the Stoner school house two weeks earlier yielded 15 dollars 77 cents.
Wesley Chapel Woman's Club met Wednesday June 16 at Maude Herrmann's home with 17 members and 5 visitors. Mae McBeth led a canning and preserving program, followed by lunch. Next meeting set with Regina Deeter for Thursday July 1 at a new location.
The Happy Hour Society assembled Thursday with 19 members and 9 visitors present. Mrs. Millie Hutchison led the program on A comfortable home. What is It. Roll call cited Habits of our family which add comfort to our home. Lunch followed, served by Mrs. Hulda Cannon and Mrs. Susan Graham. Next meeting is July 8 at Mrs. Retta Carson’s home with Millie Kearns leading.
A poem laments that Stephen State lies in an unmarked grave in the church yard while his deeds are remembered in living memory. It praises his quiet service, from helping with wood and hay to aiding the sick, noting his cheerful, patient spirit and the lack of a monument beyond the mark he left in hearts.
Emma Anderson traveled to York on Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Edwin Swanson visited Lincoln on Sunday. Mr and Mrs G J Mentink and kids drove to Seward and visited Mrs Chas Martens. The Farmers Union Local met Monday evening at Edwin Swansons with a large crowd, a fine program, ice cream and cake. Mrs Chester Johnson spent Tuesday with her parents G J Mentink.
Ada Stark and Alma Curren spent Sunday in Lincoln visiting shops and attending local events, enjoying the city’s scenery and hospitality.
Victor Berggren made a business trip to Omaha this week. George Englehardt shipped a car load of hogs today for Pete Lindholm. Relatives from a distance who attended Spencer Query’s funeral will return home this week, except Ray Query who stays in Osceola for an indefinite time.
Sheriff Roy Van Hoosen of Polk County and the bonding company are defendants in a 10000 dollar damages suit over the death of Herbert Cochran. Cochran, a Osceola youth, was shot last March by Fred L. Johnson, then a liquor prosecutions investigator for the sheriff. Johnson is serving a ten year penitentiary term for the killing.
On Wednesday June 16 the Asceola W C T U hosted a sunset social in M E B Church parlors with forty seven guests. The program included songs talks and a short play followed by a social time and a nice lunch. Mrs Bowser received a large rose bouquet as the oldest lady present. This marks the second year of the annual entertainment planned by the W C T U as an ongoing event.
Miss Ida Hanson and the Joel Hanson family joined Mrs. Peter Hanson of Stromsburg and Polk County relatives to celebrate her 82nd birthday. A cake with 82 candles and floral bouquets highlighted the gathering.
