The 4 H Homemaking Club met at Dave Rutter’s home where a bulle tin board was demonstrated. Lunch was served, games were played, and plans were made for a park picnic at the next meeting. Reporter Jackie Rutter.
The Shelby Go-Getters gathered at Stromsburg park for a picnic supper followed by a brief meeting. The next gathering is scheduled for July 23 at the home of Jerry and Janet Dunning with guests Mr. and Mrs. Bob Lamb and family and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Garey and family. Reported by Jerry Dunning.
The Cherrie Sisters 4 H Club met with leader Mrs. Lewis Dunn to finish their skirts and complete blouses by the next meeting. A style show for mothers is set for Wednesday night July 11 at Barbara Wieseman's home. Each girl will present a sewing demonstration. Reporter Betty Lou Burritt.
The Hobby 4-H Club met at Kathy Fikenhorst home with roll call pledges and a pot holder making lesson. Games were played and lunch served by Kathy and her mother, reported by Shelley Bond.
The Daisy Dairy 4-H Club met at Clarence Scherer’s home on Friday June 8 with President Donnie Watts leading. Members learned about preventing horns and cow anatomy for judging points, and Douglas Dunn demonstrated a pedigree. The next meeting is set for July 13 at Gerhard Lux’s home.
Phil B. Campbell of the George P. Mace estate announces a Polk county land sale. Three tracts, including an improved quarter section with a house, will be offered for bid on Wednesday June 27 at 2:00 p m at the south front door of the Osceola courthouse. Inspections for the house are June 24 and 25 from 10 a m to 5 p m. Unimproved hay farm and pasture land are also included.
The writer admits a lack of ideas as summer begins and Flag Day is noted. A self deprecating piece traces failed attempts at topics from weather to people, ends with the notion that writing a column is no cinch.
Polk County votes to participate in the Seven County Project a comprehensive study of mental illness and retardation. Dr Thaddeus Krush and associates outline plans with Mrs Edith Heilman to provide intensive treatment at the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute starting by July 1 1956.
Siglers lead the softball standings with an undefeated record as the first round ends. Record sits second, while Crouses and Maleks are tied for third. Friday’s results show Siglers defeating Johnsons 15 to 4, with East Side 7, Kepners 8 and Maleks 7, Mecacenawineseee Sooners 7. The next series opens Tuesday with Record versus Crouses and Maleks against Kepners. Standings as of Monday June 18 place Siglers at 6-0, Record 5-1, Crouses 3-3, Maleks 3-3, Andersons 2-4, East Side 2-4, Kepners 1-4, Johnsons 0-6.
The Grand Guardian Council of Nebraska International Order of Job's Daughters held its 35th annual session in York June 12 13 14. Judy Koehler of Osceola represented her chapter and was chosen Grand Bethel 3rd Messenger for 1956 57 and installed Thursday afternoon.
Temperatures near 100 degrees dominated Osceola last week with 99 degrees recorded by Harold Klingman and several days staying in the extreme high nineties. Humidity intensified discomfort on days below 90. Two showers delivered .46 and .48 inch, totaling just under an inch for the period.
Osceola's Ball Club were blanked 6-0 by St. Mary's. Burt Brazee fanned 11 for Osceola but the offense failed to score. The box score wasn’t available. The team heads on the road Sunday June 24 for a game at Lindsay.
The annual Grossnicklaus and Schmoker picnic was held on Father's Day at Pawnee Park in Columbus. Seventy seven relatives attended from Columbus Grand Island Platte Center Loup City Stromsburg Rising City Shelby Lincoln and Osceola.
Mr and Mrs Rolland Johnson announce their third daughter Sharilyn Ann born on Father's Day June 17 weighing eight pounds six ounces. Mr and Mrs Kent Perry announce their third son Robin Trent born June 16 at St Marys Hospital in Columbus weighing seven pounds fourteen ounces. The Perry brothers are Rickey Kent and Randy Van.
The Red Cross will sponsor a free three week beginners class at the Osceola pool taught by W H Norton for Osceola and Shelby residents. Lessons run Monday to July 13 starting four o clock, about one hour, for six year olds with season ticket holders admitted.
Mrs. Joseph Szmydt aged 72, mother of Very Rev. Msgr. Adam Szmydt of St. Marys Osceola, died June 16 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Norfolk after years of ill health. Born February 16 1884 in Rajgrod Poland she immigrated to the United States in 1913. She was active in Catholic and Polish community groups and survived by her husband, son, and one grandson. Requiem mass was held June 19 at St Marys Pilsno Osceola and burial followed in Holy Cross Cemetery Chicago.
Water pressure in the standpipe climbed from 30–35 feet to 90 feet after residents curtailed use, restoring fire protection. Harlan Rowan the Water Commissioner notes 90 feet ensures adequate protection and has held since restrictions began. A new Gospel Ridge well nears completion with pump arrival anticipated later this week. Officials aim to start pumping into city mains around the first of the month after purification and state tests.
Rev E A Keil taken the Osceola charge by the Nebraska Methodist Conference preached in his new church for the first time. His wife and three children Arlin Ronnie and Jean accompanied him as he shared his pastoral transition from Elgin and Republican City to Plattsmouth previously serving before moving to Osceola.
Judy Koehler daughter of Mr and Mrs Wesley Koehler was installed as the new Honored Queen of International Jobs Daughters Day night June 10. Karleen Carlson retiring queen acted as installing officer with assistants including Sonja Walker Kay Taddiken Marleen Richards Donna Rutter Ardith Anderson. Several officers were installed such as Jeanne Inness Karen Wieseman Marleen Carlson Sandra Colby Mardell Berck Betty Lou Burritt Mavis Carlson Linda DeTurk Shirley Jones Lora Lee Dawes Marian Inness Joyce Roberts Annette Watts Rita Chastain Lois Jones Leila Miley Dorothy Watts with Karleen Carlson Kay Taddiken Sonja Walker Marleen Richards Diana Thorpe Donna Rutter Ardith Anderson. The retiring queen received her Past Honored Queen pin.

Mrs John Inness was elected president of the American Legion Auxiliary at the regular monthly meeting last Friday. Officers for the coming year include Mrs Sheldon Bond vice president Mrs M A Mills Jr secretary treasurer Mrs Ross Richards chaplain and Mrs Carl R Johnson historian.
Farmers on land with no wheat seeded for grain in 1954 55 and 56 may apply for a 1957 wheat acreage allotment. Applications must be written to the county ASC committee by July 16 1956. Blank forms are available at the county ASC office for filing requests.
A two vehicle crash at the 30A 92 and 81 junction left Richard J. Kuszak of Omaha with minor cuts while Allis S. Evans of Andover escaped injury. Kuszak’s car sustained about 600 dollars in damage and Evans’ pickup about 300 dollars. Both cars were this year models.

The Treble Quartet of the Lutheran Bible Institute Minneapolis will give a concert at Calvary Lutheran Church Swede Home Sunday June 24 at 11 a.m. and at St Paul Lutheran Osceola at 8 p.m. The quartet includes Laurel Erickson Cambridge Rhoda Monseth Valley City Carolyn Baalson Sioux Falls and Darlene Nelson Duluth Deaconess Hulda Simonson will offer the meditation. The group is touring Minnesota Iowa North and South Dakota Nebraska Kansas and Texas.
Ralph Watts was chosen as chairman of the temporary committee in Osceola to study rural fire district formation in Polk County. Paul Monson and Carl R. Johnson join as secretary and directors. The group will meet with local firemen Thursday to plan the campaign and discuss district boundaries and required signatures from 60 percent of freeholders.
Mrs Harold Klingman entertained children at a wiener roast in Osceola Park on Monday to celebrate her son Bradley birthday anniversary. Mrs Henry Krogh and Gordon of Omaha were guests Sunday at the Axel Anderson home.
Four dynamite blasts damaged a Missouri Valley Construction Co. paving machine near Rising City and Shelby, costing about 1200 dollars. The State Safety Patrol and Butler County authorities investigate, with farmers reporting hearing four blasts mistaken for thunder. The project paused Monday but new equipment allowed work to resume by Tuesday.
Fifty neighbors and friends surprised Mr. and Mrs. Fred Husak on their 25th wedding anniversary at the Meister home with a lawn picnic and card games. Prizes went to Mrs. Clem Marak and Thomas Husak, high, and Mrs. Ralph Watts and Gerhardt Lux, low, as a silver cake and silver dollars were presented.

Placek Nebraska road officials call directors of Highway 92 Road Committees and local business leaders to a June 23 meeting at the Saunders County Court House in Wahoo to discuss future improvements extensions and completion of Highway 92. The note also mentions a Texas trip by Dora M. Lockard a new service station in Osceola and various local happenings.
