A verse lament for the impact of the name Hughes on the Democratic side. The speaker notes uneasy shifts in opinion, cites Wilson’s mixed results, and claims campaign efforts have not erased doubts. The refrain suggests lingering fear and political blues caused by Hughes.
Eighth Grade Graduation exercises were held Saturday afternoon in the Polk County Auditorium. Over one hundred students from area schools received their diplomas. The program included musical numbers and a speech by Supt. A. H. Waterhouse of Lincoln. A class photo was taken in the courtyard by C. B. Clark. The day was ideal and the ceremony well conducted.
Word came Friday of the death of J. P. Smith at his Stromsburg home after a battle with throat trouble and neck growth. Born 1829 in New Hampshire, he moved to Illinois, then Iowa and Nebraska, settling near Stromsburg in 1871. Survived by wife and five children, he served sixteen years as justice of the peace and was highly regarded in the community. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. from the home with Rev. J. H. Presson officiating.

Names include Barber's patrons and area families, with several trips to Lincoln Omaha Polk and Stromsburg for weddings funerals and visits. Eli Blevins died in Shelby Friday afternoon from heart failure while standing in front of the Reece garage. A respected citizen leaves a widow and seven children and siblings across Indiana and Nebraska. Funeral services were held at the U B church in Shelby with interment in the Shelby cemetery. he was 67 years old.
Due to many teachers taking vacations and late July exams, a special examination has been authorized for June 25 and 24 in all county and city certificate subjects. Reading circle subjects will be offered again on June 24. Amelia Rasmussen County Supt.
