Pfc. Tommy Mickey Jr enlisted in December 1943 and entered active service in December 1944. He completed a gunnery school and received his wings May 12 at Kingman Arizona.
Polk soldier Doyle Sundberg with the Army in Europe and a friend stopped a civilian with a suitcase. It contained $81,000 in American currency in five dollar bills. They turned the money over to their commanding officer for proper disposition. Doyle Sundberg’s parents are Mr and Mrs A E Sundberg of Polk.
Katherine Pliefke of Osceola stays with her relatives the Ekstroms as her mother heals at Osceola hospital. McCool guests include Fred Bergin family Luther Rhodes and Frank Bolton hosts. Lorraine Larson of Omaha visits her parents Clarence Larson. Art Ekstrom birthday celebration brings Carlson Ekstrom Pliefke and Altona Johnson together. Garry Bergin visits Bolton while Larson family visits Forss family.

Dale Cummings radioman first class has survived two ship sinkings and sails home to visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. Allan Cummings in Seattle. He served on the destroyer Little sunk off Okinawa and previously on a sub chaser sunk in the Atlantic. Allan Cummings, an electrician, helped work on the Little during construction in Seattle shipyards.

Pvt Jimmy Brazee arrives from Amarillo for a week’s furlough to visit family. Pvt Gene Cole reports for duty at Fairmont after a two week leave with his mother. Richard Matheson PhM 3c arrives from the west coast for a ten day leave. he served on U S S Indianapolis at Okinawa and Iwo Jima and participated in Tokyo attacks. Lt Richard Malek rests at Santa Ana awaiting reassignment. Hubert Fox of Camp Wolters visits Le Moyne Swanson in Osceola while basic training continues. Lt LaVona Anderson ANC transfers from Topeka hospital to Camp Beale nurses quarters.
Sif T Sergeant Lyle Nelson arrived from Ft. Sill Oklahoma for a two week furlough to stay with his parents Mr and Mrs Andrew Nelson in Osceola.
Pfe. Ivan R. Iler an infantry paratrooper has been selected for the Royal Guards protecting General Eisenhower in Frankfurt Germany as part of the occupation army. Lt. Sam Byers informs his parents he landed in Georgia from Italy and expects to be home soon. W Bcb Timm, on leave from Tilamcock Oregon, visits Osceola with his wife and daughter. Sgt. Carl Moore ship navigation and gunnery training moves from Cherry Point to Washington for overseas orders. Yeoman 2-c Bard visits Wahoo then returns to Norfolk. his wife stays behind.
Mr and Mrs LeRoy Rhodes visited in Lincoln on Monday. Frances McCormick of Omaha enjoys a three week vacation from Methodist hospital duties visiting her parents. Lanny Lee McCormick of Stromsburg spent Friday with his grandparents. Glenn Buchta home on furlough heard at a dinner hosted by Hilbert Buchta with Deeters and McCormicks present. Wilda Joyce Carlson and mother returned from Stromsburg hospital. Holmes and Martin families visited Silver Creek. Cedric Fineey’s family joined Ray Graham’s for dinner as Keith Graham sails soon for the army.
The Farmers Union local 524 will hold an open meeting Monday evening June 18 at 8:00 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Swan son. Prof H C Filley of the University of Nebraska will speak on The Wealth of The Nation. The program includes Ruth Holmberg Martha L Taylor Nancy Johnson Allan Warner and ice cream and cookies afterward.
The second annual Sandell reunion gathered Sunday at Buckley Park, Stromsburg, with a picnic supper. Attendees included multiple Johnson, Sandell, Anderson, and Peterson families from Stromsburg Osceola Benedict Lincoln Grand Island and Polk. The organizing committee for next year features Mrs. Leonard Mentink, Mrs. Wallace Sandell, and Mrs. Reynold Peterson.
District 54 residents and relatives visit and travel as many stay busy with care duties for Kate Zipper who died early Monday. Several locals leave for employment in Omaha Lincoln and San Antonio while others visit family members in Osceola Round Lake and North Platte. War service also brings Billy Wyman Raymond Staroska and Milton Hardie to the Philippines.

Lloyd G. Johnson aged 44 died at Lutheran hospital in York after a brief illness. Born on a farm near Osceola he farmed near Polk before moving to York in March. Survived by wife and son Robert of York, his parents C. J. Johnson of Hampton, six sisters and three brothers.
Rev. and Mrs. W. W. Alverson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Presbyterian Church in Rockwall Texas on Sunday June 3. Daughters Mrs. Brazee and Mrs. Weaver and sons Walden and Dwight joined in the observance with a vow renewal conducted by Rev. Joseph Russell of Dallas at an altar of gold and white flowers.
Members led by Mrs. Jack Burger completed thirty five articles for the home at a cost of 11.08 with an estimated value of 26.60. The group formed early in the year and saved money through their projects.
