The Humphrey Democrat reports that farmers may miss August 15 weed-cutting deadlines as road overseers avoid driving into corn fields to protect crops from hopper infestations. County and township officials also refrain from enforcing weed destruction this year, citing hopper damage concerns.
Farmers cooperating with the farm bureau plan a basket dinner at noon at Buckley Park Stromsburg on Thursday August 5. A national organization worker will speak on the program followed by cold drinks coffee and entertainment. Farm families are especially invited.
The State Journal discusses resentment over reduced monthly old age assistance payments and the shift toward a federal pension plan. It notes that as funds grow, direct relief may persist, with 13 million more to be distributed next biennium. Investigators find some aid goes to recipients whose families neglected responsibilities.

Mrs Herman Laessle of Mitch ell sustained a fractured pelvis in a Friday crash six miles west of Scottsbluff when their car hit a truck driven by Raymond Larner of Gering. Jimmie Laessle had scalp lacerations and Donna June may have back injuries. The Laessles, former Polk residents, left about ten years ago and have relatives in the area.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Tewell of Los Angeles stopped en route to Philadelphia for a two month eastern visit with relatives. The trip marks his first return to Polk since the town’s founding. Numerous local residents hosted and visited, with church events and social engagements noted throughout the period.
Mrs. Ted Young traveled from Kansas City to spend the night with Mrs. Edith Dillsaver then headed to California to join Mr. Young. Local families hosted and visited include the Browns, Newcomers, Beaty, Swansons, Torells, Madsens, and Rosdahls with several trips to Indiana, California, and Colorado. A wedding is announced for Laura Powell and Lee Larsen with plans to reside in Colton California after their June 14 ceremony.
Mrs. Gus Becher learned her husband died of a heart ailment Sunday night at Teeton lodge in the Jackson Hole country Wyoming after returning from Estes Park Colorado. He was 55 and senior partner in Becher Hohenberger Chambers insurance and investment firm in Columbus. Survived by wife Mary and son Alfred and two other sons George and D. T. Martyn joined in the trip to Jackson Lake.
Notices to contractors call for bids on paving and gravelling Highways 16 and 81 through Osceola. Groundwork on the new highway nears completion and work has begun on two new bridges. Bids to be opened August 12 call for about half a mile of concrete pavement in Osceola city limits and roughly nine miles of gravelled road.
A Sunday afternoon storm struck the county with near cyclone winds and heavy rainfall. Trees were damaged and two inches of rain fell in about two hours, Osceola the heaviest, with lighter amounts in Stromsburg Polk and western points. The moisture was welcomed for crops.
Three year old John Trenerry Jr. fell from his father's moving car east of Fremont, suffering only minor cuts. Mrs. Trenerry fainted after seeing him hurt. The vehicle was left on the highway and was struck by a Rushville party's car, injuring Adah Riggs and badly damaging both autos. Mrs. Trenerry was formerly Dorothy Koehler of this city.
Melvin Wieseman was released Tuesday and Hiram Conrad Wednesday. Bernell Keebaugh had tonsils removed by Dr Eklund. Mrs Leonard Fellows unter underwent appendix removal by Dr Schroeder. Mrs Otto Horst released Friday. Eileen Kelly went home Wednesday after minor surgery. Howard Herbes and wife of Polk celebrate a nine pound baby born at Osceola hospital on Monday July 19.
Shelby Allan Barker of Marysville visited with two Marysville friends at the Fasbender home from Thursday to Saturday. The United Brethren church sold ice cream at Strain's Hall raising 23 dollars. Mrs. Will Merrick of Pasadena arrives to visit Polk county relatives before joining her son-in-law and daughter in New Jersey. Village Marshal duties pass back to Matt Fosbender after a sick leave, with Ed Shaw acting in his place. Oliver Strange and his niece Una Hanshew visit Lincoln, Kansas. Sacré Heart youths hold a lawn party at John Fozzard’s. W A Cornish and two grandsons visit Rev. Con Hewitt in Cotesfield. F M Leibee visits Exeter. Frank Leibee and family visit Beatrice. McMeekin children visit Shelby while parents vacation to Lynwood, California. Irene Carson returns from six weeks at the State University. Mr. and Mrs. Custer, Mrs. Hicks, and Mrs. Elizabeth McNeil visit the Leibee home. McNeil returns to California with her brother Arthur Leard’s body for burial at Rising City. Mrs. Leibee spends time with granddaughter S W Peterson in Victor. Sacred Heart church announces the marriage of Glen Augustin and Helen Fozzard. Schmidt family from Panoka Alberta visit Laura Taddiken.
Mr and Mrs Nels Brown visited Mr and Mrs Alfred Strueb in Polk on Sunday according to the local social note.
Funeral services for O W Wickberg 68 blacksmith and machinist of Stromsburg were held with Rev J L Hedblo om in charge. He died after a year of ill health in an Omaha hospital. Surviving two sons Rolland Columbus and M B Wickberg Indiana and two daughters Mrs Helen Cuda and Mrs Bertha Taylor Many. Baseball fans travel to Lincoln as Stromsburg Town Team competes in State Baseball Tournament. they won 8 to 2 over Seward then lost 4 to 2 to Kearney and were scheduled to play again Thursday. Arthur D Morrill fatally backed truck over 100 pound pig. next day a calf entangled in a downed electric line, causing electrocution. Sandberg and Johnson advancing Polk County Rural Electrification project prep Stromsburg for construction starting August 1 with many trucks and equipment at Nelson garage. Byron Johnson and a son born Monday. Mr and Mrs W M Scott returned from Sioux City to see Mrs A Scott. Rev J L Hed bloom visited Mrs Hed bloom's sister Mrs Tillie Castile in York.

Mr and Mrs Ernest Flodman of Polk visited the Hartwig Flodmar home. Miss Sylvia Fredrickson stayed with sister Mrs Oliver Johnson. Hilda Carlson of Kiowa Colorado arrived to visit Gust Chindgren. T C W Club meets at Mrs Harlan Johnson's home July 29. Mr and Mrs Moore of Omaha visited their daughter Mrs Carol Flodman. Oliver Johnson and children and others were Sunday dinner guests at Ernest Daddow home in Loup City. Mrs John Lind of Texas visited Albert Jones and Petrus Nelson homes. R J Nine was in Lincoln on business. Miss Darlene Johnson visiting Ernest Daddow home in Loup City. Mr and Mrs Luther Rhoades and son Jess of Benedict were Sunday dinner guests at Frank Bolton home. Mrs Freda Waller of Chicago visiting relatives in York with Mrs Marvin Fredrickson and others.
