Auditions For Polk County Fair Contest Revue

Auditions for the Venita Rich Talent Contest Revue are set for July 11 at the Polk County 4-H Building with two and seven pm start times. Talent of all ages is invited. twenty numbers will be chosen to perform at the fair. The top act earns transport to New York City to audition for Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour and more. Miss Rich will conduct the Osceola audition in person.

Car Wreck Sends Three To Hospital

Two 1952 Ford cars from Stromsburg collided Sunday night near junction 30A and 81. Ralph Johnson's car carried four passengers. three taken to hospital, one released later. Delano Ahlquist's car had six passengers. none injured. Damages totaled for both vehicles.

Navy officer candidates graduate at Newport Rhode Island

Morris L. Richards Jr son of Osceola residents graduated from the Navy Officer Candidate School at Newport Rhode Island and was commissioned Ensign July 2. The 488 new officers completed 18 weeks of navigation engineering seamanship military justice and naval weapons study as Rear Admiral John A Snackenberg presented certificates. Graduates were assigned to ships stations and specialized training.

Mrs. George Barber Dies After Long Illness

Mrs. George Barber, 77, of Stromsburg, died Sunday at Rest Manor in Osceola after a stay at Annie Jeffrey Hospital. Survived by husband George and two sons Loren and Harold, all of Stromsburg.

Final Rites For Lawrence Hoffer

Lawrence Lee Hoffer, 78, died Wednesday July 3 at his Stromsburg home after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Saturday July 6 at the Stromsburg Methodist Church with Rev. E C Williams officiating. Interment followed in Blue Ridge Cemetery. Survivors include his wife and a son Donald who resides in Hackberry precinct.

1957 Road Maps Now Available

State Engineer L N Ross announced this week that 1957 highway maps are available in limited quantities. The maps show only existing roads not yet designated as part of the State Highway System, and will be updated as new roads are built. Lincoln Coliseum Ready For Use During 57 Fair

Lincoln special: the new $400000 State Fair Coliseum will be usable during the 1957 exposition from August 31 to September 6. Constructed after last year’s fair, the 200 by 280 foot building houses a 200 by 85 foot arena with about 4000 seats for events and 7500 with chairs for stage shows. A wide concourse encircles the arena to handle traffic and provide exhibit space. Open class livestock judging and Quarter horse events will be held at the Coliseum during the fair.

Navy Enlistees to Train in San Diego This July

The U S Navy Recruiting Station in Lincoln Nebraska announced that all Navy enlistees will receive Recruit Training at the U S Naval Training Center San Diego California during July. Previously training occurred at Great Lakes Illinois. Osceola post office hours are listed for a Navy recruiter.

High Winds Cause Widespread Local Damage

Severe Sunday night winds driven across the valley north of Osceola felled trees and damaged roofs and buildings. A half inch of rain fell, electricity flickered off for hours, and a tornado warning was issued but no ground touchdown occurred. Grand Island logged 88 mile per hour winds, with hot spells and intermittent rain easing heat briefly after July showers.

Osceola pitcher trio Row an Sterup Brazee allowed six runs while Monson and Grossnicklaus caught. A large crowd attended the Wednesday game as Weston posted the five run victory. Navy Recruit Co. to graduate in three weeks at Great Lakes

The special Nebraska Navy recruit company at Great Lakes, Ill. stays on schedule for three weeks more of training ahead of their July 22 to 28 graduation during Salute to Nebraska week. Celebration of Plattsmouth Church Centennial

The Plattsmouth Methodist Church marked its centennial with a morning sermon by Bishop H Bascom Watts of Lincoln and an afternoon talk by Dr Richard Miller the Omaha District superintendent. An evening banquet featured Dr Frank of the St Pauls Methodist Church Lincoln as speaker. A longtime member aged 64 years attended along with two others aged 61 years and the centenarian woman who celebrated her 100th birthday last year.
