Last minute filings for Polk County’s 1938 primary election closed Thursday at 5 p m. The list shows many unopposed Republican efforts and multiple Democratic contests for sheriff attorney and other offices. Key candidates include Jay Hastings for state senate and Olive M McBeth for county superintendent with eight rural power district directors listed.
The church announces no preaching services in July and August and that Sunday School will meet at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday until September 1.

Elevators run night shifts as golden grain pours in. Some damage from a Saturday storm near Osceola and hail near David City. Benedict notes heavy rainfall locally.
Mrs Jessie C Marquis, born February 18 1863 in Kenton Ohio, died June 30 1938 at her Osceola home after a brief stroke induced illness. Survived by son Vance Marquis of Omaha, Nebraska, she taught in Blair and Osceola, served on the Library Board and as acting Librarian, and belonged to Eastern Star and the Women’s Club. Funeral services were held July 2 at 2 30 p m from her home with Rev Albert C Monkman officiating. interment in Osceola Cemetery.
LaVelle Carlson of Stromsburg had surgery Wednesday morning. Mrs Charles Hastings and Larry Wayne were discharged Saturday. I J Merrick, a medical patient, was moved to an Omaha hospital last Thursday and operated on Saturday. improving. Mrs John Schneider transferred to Lincoln hospital Friday. Ed Mustard returned home to Silver Creek Saturday.
Mary Kline of Shelby visits cousin Mary Mesging for the week. A class of thirteen had first communion at St Andrew's church. Bright Side 4-H met with Marcella Kroger July 6. Barbara Cerney Elsie Cerney Lucille Eller traveled to Lincoln for beauty operator tests. Lucille modeled. Ellers hall hosted a ball game and ice cream social with Platte Valley winning. Mrs. Jaax suffered a broken wrist when her car overturned near Duncan Monday evening. Martin Waline of Genoa was a business caller here Thursday.

Gordon Fredrickson and Arthur Peterson’s family left for Rushville and the Black Hills. Iren Chrisman of Cordova visited the Nine home for a couple of weeks.
The Methodish Church lists Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. with El ton Berck as superintendent. Morning Worship at 11:00 a.m. features a sermon titled The Example of Jesus Christ in the Home. Evening activities include Junior and Intermediate Leagues at 6:30 p.m. and Senior League at 7:30 p.m. Pastor A. Monkman leads.
Harvest in Wesley disrupted by hail high winds and rain Saturday evening. Kenneth Richards sidelined with a broken leg. Local families and visitors traveled to Omaha and Lincoln for hospital and family visits, picnics, and gatherings across Shelby Silver Creek and surrounding towns.
Polk County residents plan an outdoor protest meeting in Wahoo Friday night to oppose changing Highway 16 to 30 A. Towns along the Lincoln Highway urge reversal citing paving plans and federal aid tied to the shorter transcontinental route. A united front will be shown at the gathering.
Miss Virginia Olson daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Olson Stromsburg and Walter Fredrickson son of Mr and Mrs Herman Fredrickson wed at the Baptist Parsonage Stromsburg officiated by Rev Gust E Carson. The bride wore navy marquisette with white accessories and pink and white flowers. Attendants were Josephine Wallin and Lloyd Fredrickson. A Sunday reception at the bride’s parents home drew fifty guests. The couple will reside on a farm northwest of Polk.
The High Prairie Mix and Stir Club met June 27 at Genelle Coover's home with most members present and two visitors. Members judged three cookies, learned a table setting demonstration, and approved minutes read by secretary Oapha Ekstrom. The next meeting is July 13 at Dorothy Fredrickson's home. Lunch was provided by Rena Mae Willits, Alice Oberg, and Genelle Coover.
Emil Swenberg birthday picnic at Buckley Park with Mr and Mrs Swenberg Rev and Mrs Ramsay and families. Edna Olson and relatives traveled to Lincoln with Eva Marie Margaret Olson and Esther Stumer visiting J L Olson home. Several couples hosted guests from Sacramento Bla den Omaha and Weston. Mrs Ella Sundberg hospitalized after major operation. Haverland and Staley attended Frederick Haverland Ruth Burroughs wedding in Beatrice and visited Weston. Victor and Mrs Anderson returned from Delaware Baptist Conference trip to New York Washington Philadelphia and Canada.
Mr and Mrs Harold Reed were business visitors in Omaha on Friday staying for meetings and engagements with local firms and clients.
Mrs Lavinia Rasp marked her 90th birthday with family at her son Johns Shelby home. Visitors included Minnie Scholz of Norman and numerous relatives from Osceola York and Grand Island. The gathering featured many well wishes and extended visits at several area homes.
The Lutheran church notes July 10 services with Sunday School at 10 00 a m Morning Service at 11 00 and Vespers at 8 00 p m The Ladies Aid meets this week with Mrs H S Eklund and Mrs James McKeag as hosts Mrs Martin Anderson to lead the program The pastor and wife are vacationing in Illinois and expect to return Tuesday next week The Harvester’s Prayer asks for seasonable weather so the community may gather the fruits of the earth and give thanks through Jesus Christ.
The Fairview Cemetery Association will meet Friday afternoon at the Hall with Mrs. Mary Miller and Mrs. Orlie Willson entertaining.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Mills and their son with Mrs H C Hansen traveled to Loup City on Thursday to visit Dr Paul Bartunek at his home.

Anton Westergren born March 16 1860 in Lund Sweden died July 1 1938 at Benedict Nebraska age 69 years 3 months 14 days. He emigrated to the United States in 1887 living with brother Peter in South Chicago and later married Hannah Peterson in 1897. Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church Benedict with burial in Bethel Cemetery.
About 175 farmers attended the Polk county Farmers Union meeting at Viking hall with delegates from Osceola Pleasant Corner Swede Home Liberty and Polk locals. A county picnic in August was planned and a resolution was adopted opposing state legalizing slot machines. Rev L M Albrecht of Victor gave the principal address.
