Winter Weather Blamed For Multiple Local Accidents

County Sheriff reports a series of January minor crashes on icy roads near Osceola and Genoa. Notable incidents include a Scout rollover with four aboard, several small-damage rear end collisions, and one street intersection collision with no injuries. The OHS varsity fell 53 to 51 to Polk in the Goldenrod Conference tournament.

Mental Health Clinic Opens in Osceola for Countywide Services

After five months in operation the Polk County Mental Health Clinic reports a highly favorable response. The clinic now operates two days a week from 1 to 4 p.m. with Thursday afternoon openings and Monday afternoons. Appointments through Wilma Headrick with Jan Zegers on Thursdays and Dr. Rob Roy, now at Pioneer Center, in York. Psychiatric care by Dr. Eli Chesen also available in York.

Bicentennial committee seeks costumes and local history items

Osceola Bicentennial committee urges citizens to plan costumes for the May to June Osceola celebration and the Polk County Fair dates. They seek help locating the old bell and cornerstone, spinning skills, and other era artifacts while inviting comments via Box 16 Osceola.

Palmer Triumphs Over Osceola In Dual Meet

Osceola wrestlers fell 33-30 to Palmer as Urban won at 145 and McMeekin, Runquist, Coffin, and Johnson contributed pins or decisons. Osceola placed fifth at Stromsburg Invitational with Harvard topping the team standings. Urban led with a 14-1 mark and Urban claimed the fastest takedown in 10 seconds.

Polk County Officials Lead Regional Natural Resources Board

New officers were elected by the Upper Big Blue NRD Board at a reorganizational meeting. Raymond Burke of Stromsburg was re-elected chairman Morris White of Ulysses was elected vice chairman Orval Eikenhorst of Osceola treasurer and LaVerne Peterson of York secretary. Directors met jointly Jan 16 to select a Big Blue River Basin representative to the Nebraska Natural Resources Commission Bruce Anderson of Stromsburg was chosen by the thirty directors at the basin caucus to fill the NNRC post.

Bloodmobile to Visit Osceola High School Auditorium

Red Cross Bloodmobile arrives in Osceola on January 27 from 10 00 a m to 3 30 p m at the high school auditorium. Donors aged 17 to 65 in good health are urged to give with a January quota of 90 pints. The Osceola effort seeks to finally meet the target after three prior visits. Bulldogs Rally Past Mustangs In Make Up Thriller 66-56

Osceola built on a 32-29 halftime lead to defeat Sutton 66-56 on home court. Doyle Nelson scored 20 points while Jeff Johnston added 14 and Daryl Nelson 12 as the Bulldogs shot 50 percent and outrebounded 26-19. Gary Trautman led SHS with 21 points as the Mustangs struggled with 17 turnovers and 43 percent shooting. The OHL reserves also beat SHS 64-46 to run their record to four wins, one loss.

Osceola Bank Names Gene Bartak President

The board of directors of the First National Bank of Osceola last week elected Gene Bartak president. Bartak has worked in banking since 1965, moving to Osceola in May 1974 to serve as executive vice president. He chairs local civic groups and serves on church and education advisory committees.
