Former Polk County Clerk and deputy S. L. Burlingame died at his Shelby residence last Saturday January 14. Funeral held January 16 at the U B church in Shelby with Odd Fellows in charge. Born February 17 1825 in Noble County Ohio he moved to Iowa in 1846 and to Polk County Nebraska as an early settler. He married Rhoda Tuttle in 1850. widower since 1889. A Civil War veteran he served in Co E 2nd Iowa Infantry and traveled with Sherman to the Sea. He held county offices from 1891 and later, and was active in Masonic G.A.R. and O.O.F. Nine children survive him.

The legislature began balloting for U S Senator last Tuesday with Judge Hayward leading the Republican field at 29 votes. John L Webster of Omaha follow with 10 and D F Thompson of Lincoln with 7. The rest share many single digit votes as the contest looks long and uncertain. Senator Allen has the fusion support.
The February term petit jury for District Court at Osceola convenes February 6, 1899 with Judge Bates presiding. The roster includes W. B. Jones, Pete Hollenbach, A Severine, F F. W. Johnson, A. F. EF Moberg, Thomas Klassy, August Fickel, trans Sterup, Charles Nyquist, August Olson, O. W. Wickburg, and others.

Obituary for Dr Rufus Elmer son of John and Mary Elmer born June 24 1857 at Bennetts Mills New Jersey. He studied at Peddie Institute Hightown Iowa Dental College Iowa City and practiced in Osceola Nebraska. Died January 10 1899 and is survived by wife Etla May Mahan and children Alpha and Zeta. Funeral January 16 with Masonic Woodman Macabees offices and Rev Dr P C Johnson officiating.
