Ex-County Official S. L. Burlingame Dies in Shelby

Former Polk County Clerk and deputy S. L. Burlingame died at his Shelby residence last Saturday January 14. Funeral held January 16 at the U B church in Shelby with Odd Fellows in charge. Born February 17 1825 in Noble County Ohio he moved to Iowa in 1846 and to Polk County Nebraska as an early settler. He married Rhoda Tuttle in 1850. widower since 1889. A Civil War veteran he served in Co E 2nd Iowa Infantry and traveled with Sherman to the Sea. He held county offices from 1891 and later, and was active in Masonic G.A.R. and O.O.F. Nine children survive him.

The legislature began balloting for U S Senator last Tuesday with Judge Hayward leading the Republican field at 29 votes. John L Webster of Omaha follow with 10 and D F Thompson of Lincoln with 7.
