Farm Home of Albert Bernt Burned in Osceola Area

A farm house northeast of Osceola was destroyed by fire Wednesday night, with the Bernt family losing most contents. Insurance on the structure and contents totals about $900, while rebuilding would cost $2,000 to $3,000. Neighbors reported the blaze, and a visit by adjustors found the origin unknown.

Farewell Surprise For Senns Before France Visit

Neighbors and friends gathered Thursday night at the Senn home northeast of Osceola to honor Mr and Mrs August Senn before their six month trip to France. The party featured dancing, cards, and a sumptuous dinner as well wishes were offered for a safe voyage and return to Polk County.

Surprise for Ralph Dearborn by Presbyterian choir

The male chorus and choir of the Presbyterian church honored Ralph Dearborn at his home on Monday evening with a pleasant surprise. He received an elegant ring for his faithful leadership in organizing and instructing the choir and chorus. Three male quartettes now flourish under his direction, including the original six year old group formed by Ware, Anderson, Ayres and Dearborn.

Obituary for Andrew G. Johnson Pioneer of Swede Home

Andrew G. Johnson born March 18 1849 in Danke Somanland Sweden, died January 1920 at age 70 in Osceola Nebraska after a long illness. Survived by wife Inga Sophia Nelson, four children Arthur N Johnson Mrs Guy Lovell Elmer B Johnson and Oscar T Johnson, eight grandchildren, three brothers and one sister. Funeral held January 9 at St Paul Lutheran Osceola with Rev Adolf Serenius officiating. Burial at Swede Home Cemetery.

Knights of Pythias lodge reorganized with 11 candidates

Zeno Lodge No. 82 Knights of Pythias held a reorganization meeting last evening. Eleven candidates were initiated with help from the David City and Lincoln degree teams. Grand Lodge officers Milner and Love led the work. A banquet followed at the Cafe. Officers for the coming year were elected, including R. B. Parris as Chancellor Commander and George Campbell as Vice-Chancellor.

Old Settler Christina Anderson Dies After Long Life

Mrs Christina Anderson born June 11 1853 in Doderhult Parish Sweden came to Morris Illinois in 1876 and lived there most of her life She left eight children and twelve grandchildren and was a longtime member of Swede Home Lutheran Church The funeral was held Wednesday at Swede Home Cemetery officiated by Rev C A Sword Messages of remembrance came from relatives and friends in the area

Osceola American Legion Banquet Set for Thursday

The Osceola Post of the American Legion will host a banquet at the Commercial Club Room in Osceola next Thursday at 7 o clock. Funeral Service of Geo W Gregg

George W. Gregg, born July 7 1838 in Franklin County Indiana, died January 7 1920 in Osceola. A Civil War veteran of the 102nd Illinois Infantry, he served as postmaster, built Osceola’s first brick school, ran a nursery and orchard, and supported education and veterans organizations. Funeral rites were held at the Presbyterian church with G A R and American Legion honors.

Burglary Spreads Across Shelby With Three Night Break-ins

Shelby reports a string of burglaries Friday through Sunday including the Moon Mercantile, Reece’s Garage and Farmers Union store. The Moon store’s safe was entered after an elevator access and part of Saturday’s receipts and unendorsed checks were stolen. A suit of clothes and other apparel disappeared, with Monday banking hours revealing the loss. Sheriff Potter investigates as a local affair.

Lincoln Tel and Telegraph hosts county employees meeting

STROMSBURG The Lincoln Tel and Telegraph Co held a gathering for county employees at Scott Hall last evening with central stations in charge by substitutes. George H. Preea served as master of ceremonies. Chauncey Arnold and W. J. Sabling wager on the Peschek-Stecher match, each backing a champion, with a chore for the loser. A band concert or grand ball may follow but has not been announced.
