Daily papers from Havana report the U S cruiser Maine exploded killing about 230 sailors and marines. A wide mystery surrounds the blast and a full investigation will be conducted.
S. E. Dearborne traveled from Stromsburg while I. B. Pitzer visited Shelby early in the week. Cloyd Burns spent Sunday at home. Col. L. A. Beltzer left for Rising to promote his nursery. E. A. Walrath conducted Democrat business in Stromsburg Monday. Charlie Beltzer drove to Silver Creek and brought Doctor Byers back. Floyd Green and Charles Burke seen in Osceola. John Arnolds and Jesse Jeffrey visited Shelby. Jesse Moffett, farming near Lincoln, visited Saturday and Sunday. Mrs Bernt mends rapidly after a buggy accident. Nora Shelmadine visited family in Rising and town. Clyde Ward plans to stay, buying the east side barber shop. Henry relocates to Mead Neb.

After a big fire in Cripple Creek I suffered a severe cold that refused to yield. Three small bottles of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy finally cured the cold and cough, which persisted in the high altitude environment. The Daily Adver cee notes the relief and recommends the remedy.

An order of sale in a Polk County Nebraska district court foreclosure directs auction of the south half of the northwest quarter and the west half of the northwest quarter of section twelve, township fifteen, range one, west, Polk County. The sale to satisfy judgment and costs is February 21, 1898 at 10 a.m. at the courthouse front door. A. EF. Nuquist is sheriff. W. J. Courtpramt is attorney for the plaintiffs.
At a Masonic festival in Enid Oklahoma toasts followed the banquet. J C Moore joked that ladies would never know why they could not be Masons in Heaven. Mrs Judge Switzer replied that there would be no men in Heaven to tell the secret. The Eagle editor mused on asbestos underwear for contingencies.
