Governor Cochran appointed Mrs Maude E Nuquist of Osceola to the Nebraska state board of control for a six year term beginning July 1 with a 4000 dollar salary per year. The nomination was confirmed by the state legislature, restoring a woman to the previously all male board.
Arthur Nathaniel Johnson born February 23 1886 in Stromsburg Nebraska grew to manhood on his parents farm southwest of Swede Home. He worked in lumber mercantile and banking before becoming a truck jobber. He died January 26 1937 in Grand Island age 50 years 11 months and 2 days leaving wife Mabel and four children. Funeral services were held in Central City and Osceola with interment in Osceola cemetery.
Swedish born Pehrs August Lund 1858 died February 1 while walking to town near Osceola Nebraska. He married Mary Linquist in 1892 and they had five children Nora Nora Hiatt Leonard and Walter Lund are among his offspring. Funeral services were held February 2 at 2 00 pm in Kepner Chapel with Rev Monkman. burial in Osceola cemetery.
Polk County pioneer Mrs August Steelquist died at home in Polk at age 82 after a fall led to pneumonia. She is survived by a son and two daughters.
Greens Chapel Lions and Ladies Aid set meetings for February 11 with a Friday community dinner planned by the Ladies Aid. Local residents, visitors and notably the Polk County Rural Electrification Project delegation attended the Nebraska Association Public Power Districts convention in Lincoln, with loan papers anticipated within about 20 days.
Sunday School at 10:00 with El ton Berck as Superintendent. Morning Worship at 11:00 with Dr B Johansen preaching. Intermediate and Junior Leagues at 4:00. Workers Conference at 6:45 followed by pot luck lunch. First conference on A Bird's Eye View of the Bible. Choir rehearsal Thursday 7:30 at parsonage. Sub-District Mid Winter Institute at Gresham Saturday. Delegates leave parsonage 9:00 AM.
Thursday 2 00 p m Ladies Aid meets in church parlors with Mrs Grant Walgren as hostess. Saturday 1 30 Confirmation resumes. come prepared. Sunday 10 00 Sunday school and Bible Class 11 00 Divine Worship 7 30 Luther League program. Valentines and Valentine candy at Crouse Tex Drug Co.
The Osceola area community lists attendance at a pre nuptial shower for Miss Lila McBeth at Mrs. Nelson Brown's home. Also noted are St Anne Sodality and Sacred Heart parish activities, hospital visits, and several local movements and visits involving Shelby residents and families.
A birthday dinner at the home of Mr and Mrs Emil Monson in Osceola Sunday hosted Morris Johnson and family Einfred Peterson and family Wm Larson and family and Arthur Monson. Birthdays within the week included Duane Johnson Donald Peterson Ramona Larson Mrs Wm Larson Solene Johnson Mrs Emil Monson and Vivian Larson. Ice cream and cake were served late afternoon and guests returned home after an enjoyable day.
Stromsburg residents attend moves and visits as Harold Smith becomes Sam uelson Variety Store proprietor. Clarence Rudeen visits Lincoln. Mrs. Erickson arrives from Englewood to handle Stromsburg business. Twin boys born to Morris and wife. Local social events include birthdays, bridge club, PEO meeting, and moves within town. Ralph Culver relocates with Lincoln Telephone Company.
Mrs N O Brown and Miss Leona Nantkes hosted a 75 guest shower Saturday at Mrs Brown’s home in honor of Miss Lila McBeth. The event featured pink and white decorations, an entertaining program, games, and a lunch in the theme colors. Mrs McBeth received many lovely gifts.
Illness kept Rev E E Pengelly from preaching in Polk Methodist Church and he used Ernest Salchow of Arborville with an amplifier to deliver the sermon from his study. Pengelly shows improvement in this report.
Fairview reports Harold Maryton visited at Columbus Hospital with pneumonia. Dist 28 teachers hosted a coast ing party on Swedenberg hills, ending with lunch at the school house. Mrs. Paul Wisley hosted Aid. next meeting planned by Mrs. Wm. Dake. Mrs. Lester McCormick honored her son Lairds birthday at the school house. Alvena Sthemmer stayed with her ill mother Mrs. Wm. Gadeke. Mrs. Lee Graham died in Silver Creek after a long local life. Local families shared dinners and visits. trips include Rayner Carlson group driving to Los Angeles for a month. Community members aiding flood relief raised funds. Niece from Grand Island visited Mrs. Guildford Bryan. Miss Oliver Heinemeyer of Columbus stayed with Elmer and wife.
Osceola's new playhouse The Muse starts operations tonight after six weeks of work by a crew led by Roy Cox. Mr Klein confirms performances will go on as advertised with daily shows and a weekend matinee at reduced prices, transforming the old venue.
Lincoln ceremony honors Carl R. Gray president of the Union Pacific for decades of scholarships to Nebraska 4-H club members and Smith-Hughes vocational students. Since 1921 the railroad has funded 100 rewards annually, with 663 total scholarships awarded and 451 to 4-H members, 285 used, 122 now farmers, 58 students at the college of agriculture. County attendees included Harold and Homer Ingalls Gordon Fredrickson Mervin Thelander and F B Keleley.
