More than a hundred Odd Fellows from neighboring towns attended a Mystic Order of Samaritans meeting in Osceola with a parade and a live bear. The issue also includes marriage news, travel ads, a church fair with a baby show and supper, injuries from a car upset near David City, and notes on residents returning to Lincoln and Omaha.
The Nebraska primary moves to the second Tuesday in August for off years starting this year. Filing requires 40 days before the primary, with petitions needing 25 signatures if friends file. Candidates declare affiliation to one party only and may accept another party’s nomination only if they win their own party's nomination.
Attorney general clarifies that the $1 penalty is not required for renewals or new registrations under Section 8369. Auto owners must license before February 1 in most counties, except Douglas and Lancaster where extra time is granted due to many receipts.
The P FE. O. held its regular meeting followed by a 5 o clock tea hosted by Mrs A F Nuquist. The Womans Club met at the high school and heard a district board report set for April 20 21732. Silent Six Birthday Club hosted a 3 course 6 39 dinner with husbands, Valentine decorations and bridge prizes. Fred Deland celebrated his 72nd birthday on February 1 with about 30 relatives at Odd Fellows Hall. he has been an Odd Fellow for 26 years. George Kresha received a surprise birthday party at his valley home with old fashioned games.
C Victor Nelson longtime Stromsburg resident died in Omaha last Friday after a two week illness from heart and arterial troubles. He moved from Stromsburg to Omaha about ten years ago and worked in loans and paint. his brother Albert W. Nelson also died minutes apart in Omaha. Both lives ended as families mourned. funerals conducted at Swedish Baptist church with Dr A A De Lamare.
George Miller, once a Polk County resident, now resides in Ashton Idaho and is renewing old acquaintances in the area.
The Fourth District of the Nebraska Federation of Women's Clubs met at the Lindell Hotel Lincoln with Mrs Thes Barr and Mrs James Inness in attendance. Plans were made for the Osceola convention April 20 to 22 with about 125 delegates from 46 clubs. State officers Will Milner J G Ackerman and G F Eaton will attend. The program features national speakers a press exhibit contest and a one act drama contest under the theme Better Homes for All Classes. Osceola will host the event.
The County Agent named six parties A C Morrill E C Nordlund An sel Fredrickson Mrs E Mouden Mrs C Edwing Johnson and Mrs Seth Piper to outline this year’s club program. The six will meet in Stromsburg on Friday afternoon February 5. L I Frisbie state leader of Boys and Girls Club work will assist and attend the Stromsburg Community Dairy Calf Club meeting that evening.
The Stoner Club met with Mrs. Wisie Stewart on January 20 with Mrs. Mae Scholdt assisting. After a business meeting, a lunch was served as the club voted to pursue extension work this year and held a follow up meeting January 27 at Mrs. Hazel Randell’s. A future gathering is set for February 16 with Mrs. Helen Adams hosting an all day open meeting to entertain husbands.
The second lesson in Conveniences for the Kitchen will be taught by Miss Muriel Smith from the State College of Agriculture. Sessions are Tuesday at Scotts Hall Stromsburg starting 1 AM and Wednesday at the County Agent's office Osceola. New Women's clubs should notify the County Agent. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thealander a daughter on February 1.
Pehr Gustaf Anderson born March 2 1841 in Masas Orebra lan Sweden died January 29 1926 at age 84 in Stromsburg Nebraska. He emigrated to America in 1869 lived in Swede Bend Iowa then Polk County Nebraska and settled near Osceola. He married Amanda Ingman in 1905 and was a longtime member and elder of First Baptist Church Stromsburg. Interment was in Stromsburg cemetery.
On January 29 the Osceola fifth grade held a surprise party for Miss Kruse at John Ed Campbell’s home. At 7 15 pm the students gathered in a darkened room and shouted 15 rahs as she arrived. Games and refreshments followed with Miss Person assisting. The class thanked Mrs Campbell for hosting and planned more events in the future.
Obituary notes Liberty Clark a longtime Polk County resident born May 15 1854 in Mineral Point Wisconsin died early Tuesday at his home. He and his family were among Polk County's first settlers later farmed in Hackberry and Osceola. He leaves widow seven children and eight grandchildren with funeral set at 2 30 p m from the M E Church.
The South Shelby Club gathered at Mrs. Marie Miller's with twelve members and ten visitors. Mrs. Viola Matticks led a lesson on easier cleaning methods for silver wood and windows, sharing recipes and demonstrating each technique. Eighteen polishing cloths were made and a radio program followed. One new member joined and lunch was served before adjourning to Feb 25 at Mrs. Gec L Irlands.
County Agent and Mr. Harry L. Keefe led meetings January 21 and 22 in Clear Creek precinct and Stromsburg. About 35 farmers attended as Keefe spoke on the farm surplus problem and public support for a corporation to handle surplus goods with federal financing initial. Frisbie and Dr. Alfred of Lincoln expected to speak at a community Call Club meeting Friday evening in Stromsburg.
Extension work for the Women in Polk County began January 12 and 18 with Miss Muriel Smith leading the project. Delegates from eight clubs attended Stromsburg on January 12 and six visited Osceola on January 18, with two more clubs planned for February.
Community column notes Mrs Arvid Anderson hosted a birthday party for her sister Mrs Milo Jay on Wednesday afternoon. Various locals including Willie Herrman Jr and the Dawes household share visits and farm work, with illnesses affecting school attendance and a move in progress at Dearborn farm.
The Polk County Ministerial Association held its February gathering in Osceola with pastors from Polk Stremsburg Osceola and Shelby present. Rev C H Skinner discussed The Rural Church its Mission Strength and Weakness and ministers planned to boost county Sunday school efficiency. The next meeting is set for March in Osceola.
Wm Carson shows slight improvement after illness. Phil and Lucy Douglas and baby visit Lincoln. A girl born to Mr and Mrs Laurence Swanson on Feb 4. Bess Shermadine marks 8th birthday with surprise party by 16 classmates. Mrs Hubert Kropatch visits brother Mike Hapday hospital stay in Columbus. Hogs shipped to Omaha by Fred Schwab Horton McKeag and Aug P Anderson. Edward Messing ships hogs to Omaha. O O Wagner will visit Baby Beef club members Friday. George Kresha surprise party with Freshman classmates at his home. Dorothy Carpenter wins first prize Joe Grezyna gets consolation. Ice cream cake with 15 candles, party praised as most enjoyable in a long time. Record editor thanks Osceola residents for news help this week.
A Swede Home Farmers Union social on January 26 featured an accordion solo, an old time music segment, and a debate on the resolution that the prohibition law is a failure. Judges ruled affirmative 2 to 1. FF. H. Frederickson’s biography impressed attendees. Lunch followed as women volunteers planned next event.
The Eden Baptist Church Brotherhood Bible Class held an oyster supper in the church dining room last Tuesday. Fifty-one men attended while four women prepared the meal and Brotherhood members served. The class, led by Rev. A. W. Lyons, aims to boost attendance to fifty by June first and issued a challenge to Polk Baptist Church for a Sunday meeting attendance contest.
