Winter Weather Has Little Effect on Game Population
Game Commission officials say subzero cold and snow cause few serious losses to wildlife. Game technician George Schildman notes a small number of pheasants rabbits quail and other species die from extreme cold but these are typically the weak or injured individuals not suitable for breeding. Officials emphasize birds and animals endure winter with adequate cover and food and warn that winter feeding by sportsmen often harms more than it helps by attracting birds and concentrating them for predators.
