Final phases of 1939 AAA farm program in Polk County
The Polk County Agricultural Conservation Association records show 90 percent of eligible farms joined the 1939 AAA program. Estimated benefits total about 631 824 dollars, including 200 000 parity payments and 300 000 conservation earnings, plus loans and crop insurance gains. Wheat and corn loans and indemnities support farmers during a year with indirect price benefits.

New County Agent Assumes Duties in Polk County
Raymond L. Cruise arrives in Osceola to begin as Polk County agricultural agent succeeding the previous extension work leader. He joins from Scottsbluff with five months as assistant agent and will officially take over February 1. Cruise, Lincoln College graduate, previously served in Dundy Sioux and Scotts Bluff counties and was active in Alpha Zeta Farm House Four-H judging teams and Innocents Society.

Hanson Wurst wedding in Osceola at Methodist Church
Doris Hanson daughter of Mr and Mrs Joel Hanson of Osceola married Harold H Wurst son of Mrs Edna Wurst of Grand Island on Sunday December 24 at 4 30 in the Osceola Methodist Church. Rev Lapthorne officiated with Rev Handel Collier of Crete assisting. The ceremony featured white tapers chrysanthemums and music by local soloists and pianists. A reception for 60 followed. The bride taught in Osceola Public Schools and the groom, a Nebraska Wesleyan alumnus, works in Geneva.

Peterson catalogs county extension work over the year detailing 161 office days and 166 field days, 8 976 miles traveled, 193 boys and 137 girls in 41 clubs, 18 judging teams and 28 demonstration teams, and 10 women’s project clubs with 172 members. Additional outreach includes 223 farm homes visited, 1597 office contacts, 1027 calls, 224 timely news stories, 1 000 personal letters, and 95 circulars to farmers, plus 1713 bulletins distributed and 11 adult training meetings with 218 attendees.

Snow began Saturday and fell intermittently, accumulating more than five inches. The calm conditions left the snow where it lay, boosting business with a late holiday spending surge and creating a festive scene across the county. The season closed with a very merry Christmas reported by residents.
Icy Roads Spark Several Local Car Crashes
Icy weekend roads caused multiple accidents involving Osceola residents. Mrs A F Nyquist suffered scratches and bruises when her car skidded near Seward and rolled over. Dr Eklunds collided with another vehicle in Omaha. The Andrew Nelson family near David City and the Alvin Anderson family from Curtis also had crashes. All occupants escaped injury though vehicles were badly damaged.

Former Osceola Teacher Wed in York Ceremony
Miss Maude Reed daughter of Clyde Reed of York married Harlan Fuehrer by Rev Earl I Doty at his York home Sunday morning December 24 1939. A wedding dinner followed at the McCloud Hotel with about fifteen relatives. The couple will live in Scottsbluff Nebraska where the groom teaches in public schools.

Mr and Mrs John Inness announce the birth of a six pound daughter at Osceola hospital on Saturday December 23 named Jean Louise. Mrs Charles Anderson is reported to be recovering well. Florence Nebosis who has been ill with pneumonia at Osceola hospital expects to leave for home late this week.
