Car-truck crash kills C Augustine Jr in Shelby area

A car-truck collision two miles east of Shelby at 7 p.m. Saturday killed Charles Augustine Jr., 21, of Rising City. Ronald Ziemba, 21, Osceola, suffered facial injuries and was hospitalized. Wayne Rice, 52, of Waco, drove the cattle truck involved. Augustine leaves a wife and two children.

Final Winners of OXCO Bucks Draw

Mrs Kenneth Studley won both top prizes in the OXCO67 drawing held Saturday by the Osceola Chamber of Commerce. She received 50 dollars plus 10 in script. Other 10 dollar winners were Ron Emmons Elsie Prell Barbara Senn and Mrs Virgil Bugbee. BACK IN USA Airman Gary A Mentink USN son of Mr Gerald Mentink of Stromsburg Neb has returned from a seven month deployment with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean aboard the Saratoga. After 10 port calls in seven countries the Saratoga arrived at Mayport Fla where crewmen will spend the holidays before sailing to Philadelphia for overhaul.

Osceola Bulldogs set for Clarks Aurora and Aquinas

Osceola Bulldogs prepare for next week after three wins and two losses. They play Tuesday at Clarks and Friday night they host Aurora. January 12 they'll face David City Aquinas, then the conference tournament runs January 16 to 20 at Stromsburg.

Weather shifts after snowfall as holidays near end

Wednesday brought bright sunshine after a Tuesday snowstorm. Readings show a sequence from December 20 to 26 with temperatures ranging from the low single digits to mid fifties and a trace of precipitation on Christmas Day, followed by a sudden spike to 2210 on Tuesday.

City Hall steel frame rising as weather delays cladding

The new storage building at City Hall has its steel frame erected but Christmas break and bad weather push back the metal skin installation. City equipment sits in the space under an exposed roof. The Nebraska Soil and Water Conservation Commission met in Beatrice on Monday December 18. The film The Gering Valley Story by the Commission was shown. Round Table talks were held on various topics. Polk County SWCC will meet December 27 at 8 p.m. in the Osceola office. Immigration and Naturalization Service warns aliens to report addresses soon, with January set as the reporting period. Forms will be available at post offices and INS offices during January.
