Economic optimism and risks for 1965 outlook
Trade and consumer prospects look strong as retail sales rise and personal income peaks. The National Retail Merchants Association reports 94 percent expecting higher Christmas volume, with a 6 percent rise over 1963 and some predicting 10 percent. Industry plans show a 5 percent investment rise in 1965, a potential record of 46.9 million dollars in productive equipment, while a looming steel strike threatens the expansion and timing of recovery. President Johnson touts continued growth amid auto industry recovery and favorable tax cuts fueling optimism.
