Fatal Car Crash Near Shelby Claims Two Lives

A single vehicle incident near Main Street and Highway 30A in Shelby killed Robert J. Fleck, 27, and left Richard Cairncross, 24, of Omaha, in critical condition. Cairncross died later at Osceola’s hospital, with officers citing a 1956 Plymouth traveling west that swerved into a tree as the cause. no witnesses were reported.

4 H Achievement Winners Announced At Recent Meeting

Polk County 4 H held its November meeting in Stromsburg with about 200 leaders members and families. A pot luck supper followed by skits and music, as well as Chamber of Commerce contributed refreshments. Pins and awards were presented including 73 and 45 year memberships, 12 junior leaders, and a Dairy Club plaque from KRGI naming the outstanding 4 H club. Numerous individual medals and certificates across categories such as leadership, home economics, health, garden, and recreation were awarded to 4 H members along with several club week registrations.

Fire destroys barn on Mouden farm near Osceola

A barn on the Mouden farm seven miles southeast of Osceola was completely destroyed by fire on Tuesday forenoon. Mr and Mrs Andrew Hanson and son live on the farm. A large amount of hay was lost. Stromsburg Fire Department was summoned but could not save the barn or its contents.

Julius Schlesinger Dies of Heart Attack in Osceola Area

Julius Schlesinger, about 75, a pioneer near northeast Shelby, died Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 after collapsing in a farm yard at Lloyd Scow's home while on an errand. The body was taken to Osceola for Kepners. funeral arrangements were not complete at press time Wednesday.

Osceola's New Grade School Becomes Modern Landmark

The new Charles W. Jeffrey M D public school District No 19 building in Osceola is described as a modern, multi wing facility with aqua hallways rose beige and lime green rooms, individual thermostats, acoustical ceilings, and a central heating system. The kindergarten and first grade areas include dedicated rest rooms and color themed tiles. The kitchen features a large stainless setup with a 65 cubic foot refrigerator, 20 foot deep freezer, double ovens, and advanced equipment. The exterior uses rose velour brick with Indiana limestone accents and automatic lighting from the principal's office, while the site offers ample playground and parking space and awaits landscaping.

Peurto Rico Theme For Cub Scouts Meeting

The Cub Scout Pack met at the Methodist church with a Puerto Rico theme. Den 1 performed a Puerto Rican music skit and cockfighting act, while Den III and Den II offered talks and tricks. Awards included Kenny Bowe silver arrow, Don Eklund silver arrow, Craig Monson bear badge with gold and silver arrows, and others. Bobcats were welcomed and the den won the grand howl for best attendance.

Osceola dominates opening basketball doubleheader at David City

Osceola varsity thumped David City 62 37 on its foe’s court marking a clean sweep over Class B opponents. Rodger Wright led with 19 points, followed by Ransom and Swanson with 12 each, and Kuhnel with eight despite a broken arm in cast. In the B boys game, Larson scored 12 as Osceola won 24 3 over David City’s B squad.
