Joyce Jones wasInstalled as honored queen of the Joos Daughters lodge on Sunday at the lodge hall. Jorie Mouden of York resigned from duties due to work hours. Roses were presented for her term as Miss Mouden received prepared roses. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 1.
Miss Midena Johnson and Mrs. Joe Fyell hosted a coffee party for former Osceola commercial teacher Helen Hfanhardt of Cortland New York at Mrs. Joe Wyell home last Saturday. Contests included participants Dorothy Gondringer of Sioux City Town Sylvester Dey of Gresham Mies delen Swanson of Ogalfiala and Mrs Milton Peterson of Os Coote wis. Hanhardt had taught at Osceola high School for many years and Swanson, another former Osceola teacher, had visited Cortland recently with Hanhardt accompanying her back to Osceola.

Mable Weaver of Lincoln and Erma DeLand of Omaha brought Jerry and Tommy DeLand of Wahoo to the Wm. DeLand home Saturday. On Sunday, Ce cil DeLand and Dickie joined to celebrate Mrs. Wm. DeLand’s birthday anniversary. Jerry and Tommy remained to visit through the week in the DeLand and Hulquist home.
Osceola sisters Jeanelle Kuhnel and Janell Bowman will perform a pantomime on KMTV in the Talent Sprouts program aired Friday is August 20 at 5:00 p.m. They traveled to Omaha for the audition two weeks ago and will also perform at York Farmers Picnic on August 24.
An Iler-Lindgren picnic in Osceola park celebrated August wedding anniversaries for Marvin Iler and his Omaha family Earl W. Carter of Merna Nebraska and Elton W. Peterson of Stromsburg. Birthday anniversaries of Mrs John Iler and Mrs L F Lindgren noted. Thirty-two relatives attended for dinner and lunch.
Osceola library adds fiction, non fiction and juvenile titles including Every Day Was New, The Inheritors, Away All Boats, Poison Valley Deadlock, Gold Mountain, Song of Ruth, and Judy Jo's Magic Island, alongside non fiction titles Food For Fifty and Contract Bridge for Beginners.
The author recalls a Colorado trip with a seven mile hike in a pine scented high country. They describe peaceful solitude, the canyon river below, a surprised chipmunk, and a sudden mountain shower, ending with a wish to move to the Rockies.
Ted R. Hughes, state Chairman, announced a 15 day emergency March of Dimes drive from August 16 to August 31. Volunteers must raise 20 million dollars nationwide to fund polio efforts and cope with higher costs for vaccine field trials and gamma globulin production.
The county board will conduct the official canvass of the Primary Election vote on Friday August 20 after all mail and absent votes are received. In the Non Political race Lisle Hanna defeated incumbent Lester Anderson for the 25th District seat, with Hanna carrying Merrick and Hamilton counties and Anderson strong in Polk. Governor candidate Victor Anderson won the state, setting up a fall match with Wm Ritchie of Omaha. Fall contests include county clerk between John J Anderson and Dale Frizzell and county attorney with incumbent Philip Nyberg and Wm H Norton nominated.
Mr and Mrs Martin Roberts and family hosted the annual Roberts picnic on Sunday August 15 at Osceola Park. Forty nine relatives and two guests attended including an exchange student from Germany reflecting the long running family gathering first held in 1905. Relatives came from Wallace Kearney Phillips Norfolk Lincoln Omaha Louisville Ashland Nebraska and Kansas City Missouri.
Rev. Robert V. Johnson was installed as pastor of St. Pauls Lutheran Church with Rev. Sabin Swenson presiding. The service featured the Rate of Installation and special music by the church choir and a male quartet. Local and visiting clergy attended while the Johnson family settled into the parsonage and his first service was held August 15.
Lt. Col Moynahan and family met Mrs Etta Leonard and Mrs Emma Phillips in Nebraska. They recently returned from France and plan to be stationed in Omaha. Separate gatherings included visits with the Goldie Johnson family in Poole and Helen Swanson in Ogallala as part of a string of guests through the region.
Osceola announces first football practice Monday August 23 with an 7:00 p m gym meeting for physicals and clearance before on field work begins August 24. The schedule adds Friend and St Edward as new opponents with David City opening Sept 10 and Stromsburg hosting Sept 17.
Missouri Valley Construction started paving Highway 92 two miles west of Osceola with one machine and 35 trucks hauling dry mix from nearby pits. The crew aims for about two months of work, dependent on weather, with a second paver soon to join and speed the job. Traffic across rural intersections is barred until curing finishes.
Clair W. Walker superintendent of schools will be at the high school daily until the start of school to provide information on board and room for nonresident students. Persons with rooms for light housekeeping should notify Superintendent Walker at phone numbers 3781 or 3121. School opens on Monday September 6.
Rainfall totals for the weekend include 0.40 inch Friday night 0.03 inch Sunday night and 0.39 inch Monday night. A later Tuesday night shower added 1.65 inches bringing the month to 5.81 inches with cooler nights and sustained moisture.

Polk County farmers will receive ballots soon to choose ASC Community Committeemen and Delegates to the County Convention. Voters must return ballots to the County Office by September 13.
Louis Charles Hohndorf of the Shelby area died Saturday in a tractor accident while en route to an adjacent field to inspect irrigation. The machine toppled on a road shoulder, pinning him. he was found about 5:30 p.m. eight miles north and east of Shelby. Investigating officials noted a severe leg wound and burns from engine contact. He died before rescue personnel arrived. burial followed at Shelby Cemetery after services at Evangelical Church. Surviving are three sons and one daughter.
The softball season winds down with a seven inning charity game at the Fairgrounds field. About 75 players from all teams participate, competing for prizes from Osceola merchants, including cash and trade awards for singles, stolen bases, doubles, and hits.
AWednesday lawn party at Margit Anderson’s home celebrated guest Janet Krogh of Omaha. Attendees included Anita Johnson, Bonnie Mentink, Donna Mentink, Nyla Pherson, Judy Walgren, Marian Carlson, Ronald Carlson, Douglas Peterson, Franklin Peterson, Gary Bowman, Gregg Johnson, Calvin Carlson and Daryle Swanson.
Weekend press delegation visited Glenville Naval Training Station Illinois to observe Navy routine and meet reservist trainees including ten Polk county youths. Lt Walter Nixson hosted tours and photos with limited operations area.
