Polk County Spellers Compete at Interstate Contest
Kathryn Huston and Bob Hansen represented Polk County at the Interstate Spelling Contest in Sioux City Iowa on Friday April 17. The twentieth anniversary event drew 128 contestants from six states with 250 guests at a banquet. Bob placed fourth in oral and fifth in written finals while Kathryn narrowly missed finals by five points.

Obituary notes William Henry Hanquist born January 7 1881 in Hamilton County died in Polk County at 55 after a brief illness. He married Wis Ellen Nyberg in 1902 and left a wife two sons Harold and Lloyd two grandsons Jerald and Dale, a father, a brother Charles, a sister Sadie Johnson and several sisters. Funeral services were held April 20 1936 at the Free Mission Church with Rev Paul E Carlson. Interment at the Swedish Baptist Cemetery.

Mrs Thelma Trued wife of Rev Alfred Trued pastor of the Swedish Lutheran Church in Stromsburg died in a Muscatine Iowa hospital after a long life that included mission work in China from 1908 to 1920. She leaves husband a daughter and a son with siblings and a sister. Funeral services were held at the Stromsburg Lutheran Church and the body was taken to Swedeburg for burial with a large church delegation.

Thirty four neighbors aided the Wieseman farm after Richard Wieseman fell ill. A morning crew with tractors plowed disced and harrowed 35 acres for corn while others mended fences and harvested seed. Twenty eight women served a cafeteria style dinner as winds and dust challenged outdoor chores.

Boy Shot by Another Youth Injures Raymond Burke
Raymond Burke, 13, son of Mr and Mrs Alvin Burke, of Osteola area, is in York hospital with a bullet wound in the leg from an accidental shooting. He was riding a pony with another boy when John Iier, 8, son of Roy Tier, fired a .22 rifle. Burke is reported to be improving.
