Nebraska Territorial Capital Battle Between Omaha and Bellevue

The 1854 arrival of Francis Burt and his brief governorship set off a struggle for the capital. Thomas Cuming acted as governor after Burt’s death, with pro Omaha and Bellevue factions vying for influence. Though accusations of land grants surfaced, evidence remains scarce. Omaha secured the capital site, while Bellevue faded politically. This dispute shaped Douglas County’s boundaries and led to the 1857 creation of Sarpy County after Bellevue’s push to split Douglas County.
