Curtain Call Opens Three Night Drone Drama Festival

Durham 4 H Club members top livestock show at the Lindsay Fair with Edgar Werry Grand Champion Dairy Showman and Rick Rickard Grand Champion Beef Showman. The Junior Holstein and Shorthorn classes feature several local youths. The 4 H Sheep Club fleece competition, sponsored by the Wool Growers and Ontario Agriculture, sees ten counties compete with Durham placing fourth. The drone drama festival runs three nights, September 23 to 29, with eight one act plays and awards on Saturday night chaired by Leonard Cramford.

CGIT Members Elect New Officers

A CGIT meeting on Monday night September 23 elected a new officer slate. Leaders include Mrs. H. Couvier as Leader and Mrs. Armstrong as Assistant Leader with Carol Vagt as President and Lynda Pears as Secretary. Treasurer is Shirley Sharron. Junior Congregation Sandra Bowins. Publicity Ruth Sharron. Peggy Hancock offered as pianist. Members sang two hymns and viewed coin offerings before planning to meet October 7 at Mrs. H. E. Couvier’s due to Thanksgiving. Members will knit for missionary work and the meeting closed with taps.

A. Mun Sees Third Barn Destroyed By Fire

A large storage barn owned by Alex Muir in Courtice burned on Tuesday morning destroying about 8 000 bales of hay and straw 500 bushels of grain and a seed drill with no animals inside The fire cause was spontaneous combustion Fire Chief Thomas Lyle said the barn had no wiring This was the third fire at the Muir farm in as many years The builder at the scene estimated the barn value at about 5000

Clarke District Teachers Association Officers Elected

An organizational meeting at Enter prise school on September 17 elected Clarke District Teachers Association leaders. McMahon became President with Greenwood as Vice President Martins as Secretary Treasurer Armstrong as Press Reporter. Dr. Charlotte Horner spoke on roles of M O H and teachers in child health and well being.

Evening Service Supports M M Work at Orono Church

The U C W of Kirby and Leskard held a Sunday evening service at Orono United Church to promote the M and M work. A film Mid Hast Profile highlighted needs in eastern countries and at home, with Jim Rickaby speaking on Christian responsibilities and special music by the Leskard Young Peoples Choir and Country Four Quartette.

Orono Library Trustees Seek Public Library Funding

The Orono Police Trustees and Library Board discussed converting the Orono Library to a Public Library financed from public funds. A budget around 1000 dollars plus a provincial grant could fund book purchases and operations. The Board approved pursuing public-library status and a joint meeting will gather more operating details.

Heather Rebekah Lodge Holds September Meeting

The Heather Rebekah Lodge met September 25 at 8 p.m. with Noble Grand Emma Lunn presiding and Vice Grand Alice Hooey assisting. About 300 attendees from nearby districts attended as officers were filled and a Friendship Night with Ajax Lodge was highlighted. An October 9 installation of officers will be performed by District Deputy President Flossie Ball and staff.

Plowing Match Planned Near Orono October 2

A Durham and Northumberland plowmen meeting in Cobourg outlined the 1962 plowing match to be held on October 2 at Howard Allin’s farm south of Orono on Highway 35. Discussion covered a tractor driving contest for 4-H members and World Plowing Match plans for 1963 in Caledon Township.

The Durham Liberal Association executive announced a nomination meeting in Orono Town Hall on November 1 to choose a candidate for the Durham seat in the upcoming provincial election. The word was received Monday evening.

Gregory Beats Mosport Park In Canadian Grand Prix

A bespeckled Masten Gregory won the Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport Park in a wet race averaging 86.5 mph in a Lotus 19, clocking 2 hours 46 minutes 28.4 seconds. Pedro Rodriguez finished second in a Ferrari, Toronto driver Francis Bradley third to claim the Canadian Drivers Championship 1962.

Orono Church Plans Meet Architect For Education Building

The Building Committee of the Orono United Church prepares to meet an architect to draw plans for the Christian Education Building. Congregation members will review the proposals when ready. Construction is expected to begin in spring after recent visits to Agincourt and Lakefield to inspect similar centres.

Word And The Way recommended for UC Women meeting

The United Church Women met in the Sunday School Auditorium for September. Mrs Velina Armstrong led devotion with Psalm themes and Mrs Drummond led singing. Rev Long introduced the book The Word and the Way by Dr Mathers as the coming year’s study.
