NDP Nominee Douglas Moffat Aims To Heal Ontario

At a Durham nomination meeting in Bowmanville, Fred Young former York view MPP blasted wealth siphoning via capital gains and dividends and charged municipal taxation shifts to homeowners. He urged public action by government to address housing and resource tax issues. Moffat accepting the nomination criticized Smith Report and rising municipal taxes while noting rural education concerns in Darlington Township.

Orono Post Office to Open Sept 29 Evening Ceremony

The official opening of the Orono Post Office will be held Friday September 29 at 7:00 pm. Attendees include M P for Durham Russell C Honey district director Ralph Fenberg and local officials. The program features the Orono Public School Choir and the Orono Band with remarks on taxation and Ontario needs.

Birthday Party Honors Mr. Fred Trull on 90th Birthday

About 180 friends and relatives gathered at Orono Oddfellows Hall to honor Mr. Fred Trull whose 90th birthday was celebrated. Attendees came from Orono, Garden Hill, Mimico, Rochester NY, with messages from Ontario Premier J Robarts. An ar rangement by the Orono Horticultural Society and a special cake framed the event.

Clarke Public Library Loan Figures Rise This Year

The Clarke Public Library reports a sharp increase in book loans. In August 1967 members checked out 1064 books, up from 698 in August 1966, including 176 adult non fiction 398 adult fiction and 490 children. Eighty new books were added that month and more are on order. A part time page will assist three evenings weekly starting October 3rd. Mrs. Robinson notes strong interest in the Orono Fair display. The board also votes to cancel membership for unpaid overdue fines.

Three Newcastle Men Die After Port Hope Car Crash

Port Hope police report three Newcastle men died in an early Friday morning crash on Peter Street. John N. Enns 29 Arthur T. Colbary 27 and Donald W. Gilkes age not listed were in a late model car that lost control struck the CPR viaduct abutment and caught fire after mounted sidewalk grass verge and broadside impact. Constable David McLauchlan and firefighters attended but the heat prevented aid.

Clarke Township approves two year council term by law

On Tuesday evening Clarke Township council passed a by law establishing a two year term for council to begin January 1 1968. Reeve Foster supported the longer term saying a year is insufficient to implement programs. Three readings were given. The council also reviewed a Department of Provincial Secretary and Citizenship inquiry about Ganaraska Speedway incorporation and asked for more information before deciding.
