The Orono Baseball team defeated Sillsville 19 to 1 in the second game of the playdown, winning the series in two straight after an earlier win in Orono. The Intermediate D champions look strong at bat and in the field and await further play.
Orone Women's Association invites all to attend the 11 a.m. Sunday service featuring Mrs. Clayton Searle of High Park Church Toronto as guest speaker. Her Address is Thy Will on Earth and she is a Dominion Council W.A. member.
Attendance at the Orono Fair Play Competition was higher this year. Orono presented The Red Lamp and My Church and Yours directed by Mrs. M. J. Tamblyn with dancing by local pupils. Lakefield and Peterborough performed Saturday with The Amazing Amarillas and The Miller Seeks a Wife. Adjudicators from Oshawa Little Theatre Group judged all four plays and prizes of 40, 30, 20 and 10 dollars were awarded to Lakefield, Peterborough, Crono and Brooklin respectively.
The Women’s Christian Temperance Union met September 15 in the Orono United Church Sunday School Auditorium. President Mrs H Walsh led with hymn and prayer. Mrs R Allin gave devotions and readings on Prayer for Peace and the UN Charter opening words. A Gold Medal Contest was discussed for late October.
Final contract for grading and culverts on the Newcastle to Orono section of the Toronto Interceptor of the by pass Highway was awarded by the Minister of Highways. Other contracts include the Kingston Bypass and the link between Highway 401 and 2 south of Newcastle. Unofficial total cost is about 4 million dollars. The Interceptor will run 30 miles from Weston Road to Highway 11 at Yonge Street.
About four thousand people attended the Durham Central Agricultural Fair in Orono on Saturday. Officials launched the 1953 edition despite rain threats. Livestock entries were down yet the Black and White show and grandstand events, harness racing, pony races, and entertainment by Bowmanville Training School for Boys and the Keppo family attracted crowds.
John M. James M P for Durham was selected to join Canada’s observer delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He left by plane Monday evening to represent at the opening session Tuesday afternoon and expects to be away about a week.
The Torngats in Labrador are Eastern Canada’s highest peaks at just over a mile high. Western Canada’s Logan Mountain in the Yukon reaches nearly four miles. Each of the past four July weeks features weddings around the country, with Lune noted as a popular choice.
