Propagation of Maskinonge An Uncertain Venture

Mr. H. C. Jackson of the Deer Lake Hatchery reports a successful year in Ontario for artificial propagation of maskinonge. About 3,320,000 fry and 33,112 fingerlings were produced in 1935, with 88 percent distributed to planting areas and 12 percent raised in hatchery ponds. Feeding limits remain, as fingerlings must shift from plankton to tiny shiner fry for growth. The report notes seining minnow fry for fingerlings, with care to avoid other species and local predators, and emphasizes using local waters for large food. Continued on page 5.
