Fire destroys forty thousand Christmas trees Saturday

Clarke Township Council met Tuesday to discuss Lakeshore Diversion Highway work and sidewalk repairs. A large fire destroyed forty thousand Scotch Pine Christmas trees at Charles Tyrrell’s nursery near MecCrea's Church, saved 80,000 more with nearby crews aiding.

Afternoon Auxiliary Meeting at Orone United Church

The Afternoon Auxiliary of the Women's Missionary Society met with Mrs. A. A. Drummond presiding. Attendees heard about the Whitby School for Leaders and upcoming events including a September 27 special WMS Sunday with Miss Anne Ward and an October 6 Autumn Thank Offering meeting.

Penfound Celebrate 25th Anniversary With Oshawa Party

Mr and Mrs J A Penfound celebrated 25 years of marriage with a surprise party at Lions Community Centre August 18 attended by 125 guests from Oshawa Bowmanville and distant points. They received an oil painting and purse of money. cake was baked by the bride. Friends and relatives included relatives from Maple Grove Orono Windsor Guelph and Sudbury.

Lightning Strikes Homes in Orono Village

An electrical storm in Orono struck the homes of Mr. and Mrs Bouwmesster and Mrs. James Lycett on Wednesday evening. Lightning knocked dishes from tables at the Bouwmesters and traveled to Mrs Lycett s home, where a burn injury was reported.

Lightning Causes Bedroom Fire Damages Bedspread

An electrical fault from a lightning strike damaged a bedroom fixture over a bed. The two way plug fused and burned a hole about the size of a fifty cent piece in the bedspread and top sheet.

Donkey Baseball Under Floodlights in Orono Friday

Donkey Baseball comes to Orono Park sponsored by the Orono Orphans hockey club as a prelude to their season. Two teams from the Orono Orphans Club and Kendal field and ride donkeys. only the pitcher catcher and batter remain mounted. Floodlights will illuminate the Friday game marking a debut for the mules in the village.

Kendal Leads Playoff Series In South Durham 2 To 1

In the South Durham Baseball League best of five, Kendal holds a 2 1 lead over Crono after four games. Kendal won 9 5 in Orono on August 20 and 8 2 the next day, while Orono claimed a 3 2 win in the third game. A fifth game was scheduled for Orono Park at 5 45 p.m. tonight.

Car Plunges From Dock Into Caesarea Water

Edward H. Flumerfelt of Peterborough drove off the Caesarea government dock into eight feet of water on Highway 7A. Bilk Witworth of Toronto and Jack Olliffe of Caesarea swam to the submerged car and freed Flumerfelt. He suffered no injuries and provided no clear explanation for the dive.

Orono Fair Adds Keppo Family and Jugglers to Show

The 1st edition Orono Fair on September 11 12 features the Keppo Family acrobats from Finland and international novelty juggler Seppo Leivo. Also on stage are the Orono Brass Band and a Clarke Township Hall dramatic contest with four one act plays.
