Orono Baseball Club Defeats Welcome Two Straight

Orono Baseball Club won its second straight game against Welcome at Orono Park advancing to the South Durham League finals. Keith West pitched eight hits allowed as Orono built an early lead with three first inning runs and held on for an eight to three victory.

Cobourg Memorial Arena Destroyed By Fire

Fire levelled the Cobourg Memorial Arena the Community Recreation Centre built three years ago for $200000. Insured for $175000, the rink housed 2400 seats and served as summer training HQ for Canadian and U S skaters. Loss includes $2000 in skating equipment. firemen saved $30000 worth ice making machines. Gordon King declined comment on rebuilding.

South Durham Baseball Finals Open Tonight

The South Durham Baseball League finals begin tonight in Orono at 6:00 p.m. featuring Orono and Kendal. Both teams earned finals berths from Welcome and Cambourne, with Kendal holding a 3-1 edge in the season series. The five game set includes Kendal at Orono on August 20, Orono at Kendal on August 25, Kendal at Orono on August 27, and Corno at Kendal on September 1, with a fifth game to be announced if needed.

Dredging Starts at Port Bowmanville for Water Intake

The hydraulic suction dredge Paul M. Jr. of McNamara Construction arrived at Port Bowmanville to deepen the channel and prepare for a 24 inch intake pipe for a new lake water system. Dredging will broaden the mouth to eight feet depth over about 400 feet to enable in and out access, with work delaying until Friday.

The Bowmanville Volunteer Fire Department lent its portable inhalator to Memorial Hospital on a permanent loan. Worth over $400 and purchased five years ago, the modern unit has four oxygen tanks and two masks to treat two patients during ambulance transfers.

Highest June Set Aside Dairy Farmers Seen To Rise

Dairy Farmers of Canada have already received over 160000 from the June fourth Advertising Set aside. Officials expect the product promotion fund to reach record levels this year, building on a 1950 history of 344000 and a target of 406000 for 1953. The program unites national groups in funded research at Macdonald College and aims to boost dairy product promotion nationwide.
