Orono Chamber Plans Santa Parade and School Site Talks

The Orono Chamber of Commerce discussed a Santa Claus parade for the village and proposed an outside Christmas decorations contest with cash prizes. They also reviewed plans for a new Durham High School site near Orono and invited the Lake Ontario Development Association speaker for the November dinner. The next meeting is the fourth Thursday in November at the Orono Restaurant.

Hi-Teens Postpone Dance to Friday November 8th

Hi-Teens announce the Sadie Hawkins dance date moved from November 1 to November 8 due to uncontrollable difficulties. The change gives girls an extra week to ask someone they like and time to plan corsage ideas while inviting all to enjoy the evening of entertainment.

Trustees To Attend Township Meeting On Gas Franchise

The Orono Trustees met in regular session with all members present. They discussed granting a franchise to Consumer's Gas to supply natural gas, its impact on hydro use, and await the township council meeting for details. The board also addressed street signs, culvert clearing, street lighting costs, and a wreath for a memorial unveiling. Nomination meeting set for November 22.

Library Board Receives Donation to Purchase Books

The Orono Library Board accepted a generous donation from Mr. H. George Beer of California to purchase library books in memory of three local citizens and to name a fourth honoree. Books chosen include Ezra Hall memorial works, William McCormack memorial titles, Dorland Gamsby memorial reads, and Stories to Remember Vols 1 and 2 for the donor.

Rural Schools Pick Public Speaking Winners

Eight Clarke Township Rural Schools contestants competed at Crooked Creek School on Tuesday October 29. David Gibson from Lockhart's school and Mary Reid from Cowanville were named rural winners with Sandra Bowins of Antioch as alternate. The two winners advance to the November 5 semifinal at Campbellcroft Hall then to the County Final at Orono United Church on November 8.

Halloween Party Captivates Brownies at School Basement

Brownies 18 attended a Hallowe en party Tuesday night in the school basement. Girls wore costumes with Cathy Houey winning prettiest and Linda Bowen funniest. Prizes, games, a lunch, and musical numbers by Marilyn Falls and others followed, with a humorous talk by Nancy Martin on speech preparation.

60 View Coloured Slides At Orono Horticultural Meet

About sixty attended the Orono Horticultural Society event held in the Orono IOCF Hall last Thursday evening. Mrs. Carl Billings welcomed guests and praised the turnout despite bad weather. Mr. Porter awarded prizes from the Durham Central Agricultural Fair and introduced Mr. Belsey who presented coloured pictures of Canada Britain and the Royal Winter Fair with scenes from Haliburton The Thousand Islands St. Lawrence River and more. Tea and sandwiches closed the evening.

Missionaries Speak On Nigeria At WMS Autumn Rally

The eastern Oshawa Presby terial WMS Autumn Rally at Newcastle United Church celebrated Nigerian mission work. Miss Ruby Wilson and Miss Annie Yeo spoke on faith, education, and evangelism, urging trained African preachers and teachers to expand outreach amid Nigeria moving toward independence. The day featured leadership reports, a hymn sing, and a community dinner with church groups aiding.

Preparations Underway For Winter Sports Program

Valier program aimed at winter activities organized by the Grene Amateur Athletic Association. A rink committee will seek an ice maker and prepare the rink site. Plans include holding a banquet to raise funds for the winter program.
