Durham County High School District plans new site amid rising costs

The board approved transportation contracts totaling 64 260 for four district schools and warned a new west end high school is needed as surveys show 1600 secondary pupils in five years. A Bowmanville site study will involve five Education Department inspectors next week. A committee led by Irwin Colwill will search for a potential site with members from Darlington Bowmanville Clarke Port Hope and Manvers.

Ssrechas Lesnick Nuptials In Newtonville United Church

Victoria Sorachan wed Zory Lesnick at Newtonville United Church with Rev. R C White officiating. The bride, daughter of Michael Zachano and spouse of Dmytro Lesnick, wore a brocade gown with train and veil, praised by steps and music by Mrs Frank Gilmer.

Art Of Making Christmas Decorations Demonstrated

The Evening Auxiliary meeting on October 17 featured a kitchenware and crafts segment led by Mrs. Aubrey Smith of Bowmanville. She demonstrated making Christmas decorations for home use, showing decor for doors halls mantles and tables. Verna Hooey moved thanks and attendees enjoyed pumpkin tarts and coffee.

Orono Oddfellows Raise Funds for Hall Debt

Orono Oddfellow Hall trustees report a charity dance and draw last Saturday drew about 150 attendees. Farrow's Orchestra played, and net proceeds of 284.08 will go toward the new hall debt with prizes awarded to local residents including Brian Boyd Orillia and Mrs Carman White Bowmanville.

The October Wom en's Christian Temperance Union gathering met Tuesday afternoon at the President's home. Mrs Allen led a thankful service and prayers followed the hymn Come ye thankful people come. The bake sale profits topped thirty dollars.

Cubs Collect Seven Tons Of Waste Paper

The Orono Cubs led by Mr. Donald Goode collected seven tons of waste paper on Saturday. Six and a half tons were sent to Toronto, with half a ton held for the next drive. The Cubs thank all who participated by placing paper out for pickup.

Everett Brown Receives Appointment in Ontario Inspection

Everett Brown of Orono has been appointed selective registration inspector for Holstein type classification succeeding George Van Patter of Aylmer. Brown and Ray Taylor will handle about 86 percent of Canada’s inspection work. the change takes effect late October with Brown likely starting in Middlesex County.

Teachers Attend Conference At Bowmanville High School

About 450 secondary teachers from Peterboro Lindsay Ajax Pickering Cobourg Lakefield Port Hope Haliburton and other centres attended a Bowmanville High School educational conference. Morning group discussions covered mass education problems followed by an afternoon main conference and a banquet with J A Edmonson of Queen’s University as guest speaker.

Orono Cub News Highlights Pack Achievements

The Orono Cub pack has met two months with many passing tests. Gardeners badges were awarded to Buzz Mercer Terry Graham Edwin Bailey Bobby Best and Rosbie Best. Trophy cups were awarded to Wayne Miker and Buzz Mercer for wood deeds. House orderly badges went to Gamey Lycett Buzz Mercer and Edwin Bailey. Swimmer badges were earned by Arnold Wallace Brian Tamblyn Buzz Mercer Casey Green Michael Fagan Wilfred Green Dane Rogerson Gamey Lycett Terry Graham Ian McKenzie and Wayne Miller. A Halloween party is planned for Monday evening with leaders asking for costumes.

Local Breeders Among Winners At Peterboro Holstein Show

George R McLaughlin of Beaverton was Premier Breeder and his Dunrobin and Elmcroft Farms entries won Premier Exhibitor at the 16th East Central Ontario Championship Holstein show in Peterboro on October 16. Fifty-seven exhibitors showed 213 head. Ormiston and Chambers figures appear among runners up and champions.
