Disorder at Bowmanville Prison Camp Over Shackling Order

Serious disturbance at Bowmanville Internment Camp October 10 followed a reprisal order to shackle German prisoners of war. Prisoners and guards were injured, furniture damaged, and a roof hole chopped. Detachments reinforced the camp and life returned to normal with no fatalities reported.

Counterfeit Two Dollar Bill Reported At Orono Bank

An oddly glued counterfeit two dollar bill surfaced at the Bank of Commerce in Orono. Bank staff flagged the note as suspicious though visually similar to real currency, noting rough workmanship from glued front and back portions and a torn edge. The incident follows reports of five and ten dollar fakes circulating between Toronto and Montreal.

District E Reaches 74000 Toward Victory Loan Goal

District E covering Clarke Township and Newcastle has $74000 subscribed to Canada’s Third Victory Loan leaving $86000 to reach the $160000 target before November 14. Canvassers met at J J Mellor’s home as money remains hard to raise and residents are urged to contribute more to support overseas servicemen and the war effort.

Farmers Urged to Keep Up-to-date Farm Accounts

Ottawa reports the Hon. Colin Gibson says farmers must file the 1942 income tax by October 15 but will receive leeway for seasonal income and expenses. He notes tax base reductions bring more farmers into taxation and that forms will be simplified with farm specifics. Farmers are urged to record all 1942 receipts and expenses now.

Young People's Halloween Party at Park Street Church

About seventy five attendees joined the Young People's Union of Park Street United Church for a Halloween party on Monday night. Prizes went to Best Comic Junior Keith West senior Dick Morton best Character Junior Wilda Hooey senior Mrs Jones southward. Donald Staples hosted and led games before attendees shared candy and a devotional thought then sang Blest be the tie that binds and recited the Lord's Prayer. An invitation to join regular meetings was extended.

The Dominion Bureau of Statistics figures for Durham County in 1941 show values for butter 219799, field crops 2677668, cattle 2012307, sheep and lambs 147814, swine 367880, poultry 176744 totaling 5602212. Higher current prices suggest better results in the Third Victory Loan and rural investors are urged to participate under the slogan Nothing Matters Now But Victory.

Cow Killed by Car on Highway Crossing

On Saturday evening October 24 a cow named Dean belonging to Mr Ed Dean was killed while crossing a highway from barn to pasture. Mr T Roger teacher at New Castle public school was driving north and when he turned Dean's corner saw a man with a lantern but did not notice the cow, resulting in a head on collision. Rogers escaped injury but his car was badly damaged.

Northumberland Durham inspectorate reports school progress and enrolments

The inspectorate led by W H Carlton notes 74 rural and 7 urban schools, 115 teachers, and first class certificates totaling 70 with many women. Enrolment for September 1942 across several townships equals 1706, high school entrance 139, and 79.2 percent pass rate on county exams. Salaries for rural schools range from 800 to over 1000 dollars. new school area in Hope Township is created. several schools received building and modernization upgrades in 1941-42.

Large Donations For Durham County Victory Loan Drive

The Special Names Objective in Durham County exceeded its goal on Saturday October 24 as two subscriptions totaling 125000 added to a 238000 local total. Port Hope Sanitary Manufacturing Company and Midland Loan and Savings Company pledged substantial amounts toward the Third Victory Loan, boosting regional leadership.
