Orono Continuation School Field Day Ended With Blues Triumph

The Orono Continuation School held its annual field day on Friday October 16 with fair weather. Events included senior girls volleyball throws, discus, high jump, running broad jump and more. The Blues under Bob Cooper defeated the Whites 118 to 89, with champions named in boys and girls divisions.

Wo men Institute of Orono Holds October Meeting

The Wo mens Institute of Orono met Friday October 16 with thirty seven present including visitors. Members planned to sell blankets at the January meeting and hold a November 14 home cooking sale. A $25 donation was approved for the Milk for Britain Fund. An update on Miss E Wallace nutrition talk and a scrap book project were discussed with a request for historical information. Pancakes and johnny cake were served with beverages.

Canada Year Book Now Ready For Sale

The 1942 edition of the Canada Year Book is available for purchase at $1.50 per copy, with limited paper-bound copies for teachers and ministers at fifty cents. Applications go to The Dominion Statistician, Dominion Bureau of Statistics, Ottawa, or to the King’s Printer, Ottawa. The book covers Canada’s geography, history, government, vital and immigration statistics, plus a wartime introduction detailing the war effort.

Red Cross Tea To Ship Christmas Boxes Overseas

The Red Cross local branch hosts a Victory Tea on Thursday after noon October 29 at the Orange Hall to fund and assemble Christmas boxes for soldiers overseas. Ladies bring tea and donate money or items such as chocolate bars, razors, playing cards, canned meats, cheese, nuts, dates, dried soup, fruit cake and more.

Wo mans Christian Temperance Union Holds October Meeting

The October meeting led by President Mrs Walsh includes devotional by Mrs Littlewood and scripture reading. Reports on temperance lessons in Sunday School, prize plans for a Medal Contest, and a poster contest with pupils are discussed. Resolutions oppose gambling and juvenile delinquency.

John Garrod of Newcastle Dies After Illness

John Garrod of Newcastle died Sunday at Oshawa hospital at age 59 afterhernia surgery and a second operation. Born in England he moved to Canada about 1910 and lived in Newcastle district where he served as chief constable and hall caretaker. Survived by his wife three sons and two daughters. Funeral was held at St George's Anglican Church with interment in Newcastle cemetery.

Orono Lodge No. 436 Installs Officers In Open Ceremony

Orono Lodge No. 436 I.O.O.F. held its annual officer installation at the Town Hall Orono on Wednesday October 14. Russ Creghton’s Toronto entertainers presented a one hour program before Bro Gordon V. Scott and his staff conducted the installation. The event featured a Past Grand Jewel presentation to retiring Noble Grand Charles Stapleton and remarks praising his service. The roll call showed strong attendance with veterans and lodge officers present and Florence Nightingale No. 66 Pontypool No. 296 Durham No. 78 Ontario No. 324 Phoenix No. 22 represented. A lunch followed and an old time dance concluded the evening.

Park St United Church Anniversary Draws Large Congregations

Park St United Church celebrated its anniversary Sunday October 18 with autumn decorations, representative worshippers, and music by the Orono United Church choir. Rev. William Sterling, former pastor, preached morning from Proverbs 25 11 and evening about Isaiah's vision and cleansing. The service concluded with Peace Perfect Peace as Sterling reflected on retirement.

Extra sugar for threshing gangs extended to Oct 31

Toronto reports the Wartime Prices and Trade Board extends the extra sugar provision for threshing gangs until October 31. Merchants must issue invoices with purchaser name and address, number of men, duration, and amount sold. The measure applies to threshing sugar only, not tea or coffee.
