Orono Trustees Plan Armouries Upgrades and Fire Dept Gear

The Orono Police Trustees discussed installing a new furnace at the Armouries and inviting community groups to apply by October 8. They approved fire department helmet purchases and a coupling for mutual aid, plus attendance by Fire Chief Bruce Mercer at a Toronto convention. Temporary Armouries use was granted to Scouts and Air Cadets.

Fellowship Circle Meet at Ken dal United Church

The Fellowship Circle gathered at Ken dal United Church with thirty young attendees. They planned a visit by Orone Young People on the last Tuesday in November and discussed faith and evangelism via the Philip and Ethiopian story. Orono Oddfellows Install New State Of Officers

Orono Lodge No. 486 IOOF installed new officers on Wednesday night October 20. B D G M Pearse and Cohorss Lodge No. 186 staff conducted the ceremony. Gratitude was voiced to retiring Noble Grand Fred Graham and 25 year jewel recipient Fred Woods. Orono Fire Department Responds to Saturday Garage Fire

The Orono Fire Department was dispatched Saturday afternoon to Dr. R. J. Taggart's estate where a mattress in a garage caught fire. Firefighters found the blaze under control upon arrival with no damage to the building, believed caused by children playing with matches. a fire extinguisher quickly put out the flames.

False alarm over Christmas tree fire near Rolph farm

A report of a Christmas tree fire at the Rolph farm proved false though a blaze did occur on the neighboring Hofford property on the eighth concession. Tom Lewis and helpers battled the flames with aid from Durham Forests. the fire damaged red pines but spared the Scotch pines as it burned a path through the farm until controlled.

W C T U Meeting Discusses Harvest and Slogans

The October W C T U meeting at President Mrs Walsh’s home featured devotional by Mrs Best on Harvest and Thanksgiving from Proverbs II, approval of prior minutes, order of 300 school blotters with temperance slogans, Treasurer’s report, reports from the National Convention in Hamilton, plans for a silver medal contest, and committee appointments. The session closed with prayer for the homeless and flood bereaved and a unison benediction.

Fifty-One Boys Enrolled In Orono Air Cadet Squadron

The Orono High School hosts an air cadet unit with fifty-one boys enrolled. Cadet day is Wednesday with two hours of instruction during school hours. Commanding Officer R. J. Taggart leads the unit, with Flying Officer Ray McCallion as adjutant and Donald Staples teaching Principles of Flight. The group plans rifle firing and future lessons at the Orono Armouries.

Orono Businessmen Push New Entrances for Village

Orono businessmen and a Ontario Highways Department official met to discuss village entry points at both ends. Concerns centered on risky approaches that could deter visitors as plans to widen the road to four lanes and realign lanes for entering traffic were outlined. Department approval was not yet secured.

Harness Racing In Orono This Saturday Afternoon

Orono hosts harness racing this Saturday at the half mile track. The Orono Turf Club sponsors the second fall meet with high heats and wagering. Parking and grandstand access are free as spectators anticipate a large turnout and favorable fall weather.

Orono Midget Hockey Team Gears Up For Winter Season

The first Midget hockey work-out for the boys of the village was held Monday at Peter Campbell Memorial Arena in Port Hope. Fifteen boys attended with strong enthusiasm. Coaches Carman Cornish and Doug ia will lead and manage the team this season as a heavy outfit possibly entering the county youth league.

The Evening Auxiliary met on Thursday October 21 with Eileen Billings presiding. They discussed the Autumn Rally at Tyrone, read last meeting minutes, reported a 260 dollar bank balance, and planned a November 2 meeting with the Afternoon Auxiliary.

Two Bank Robbers Captured Within Seven Hours

Oshawa patrolman Jack MacDermaid aided by police arrested James Hutchinson and Leonard Lauzon within seven hours of the Orono branch robbery. Over $1,700 in cash, a pistol and bullets were seized. The suspects, charged with armed robbery, were taken after a hotel confrontation in Oshawa following the 2:45 pm heist at the Canadian Bank of Commerce.
