The Orono Amateur Athletic Association outlined a busy year at its annual meeting in Orange Hall. Totals show expenses of 1126.94 with 147.95 balance. winter plans include three hockey teams and a Kendal team using the rink. summer programs featured Park Recreation and swimming with about 100 children enrolled.

Crono Orphans Begin Season With Home Loss To Lakefield

The Crono Orphans opened their season on home ice in Port Hope, losing to the Lakefield Indians. The Bowmanville Legion Pipe Band paraded on Main Street, delaying traffic for 15 minutes.

Clarke Township Passes Third Reading On High School By Law

Clarke Township Council met in Orono with Reeve Art McKay and votes approved adjustments to dog tax and a $25 grant to a game warden. By law No 1244 provides a special rate to fund the Durham County High School District construction and annual debt payments for a new Port Hope school and Bowmanville addition.

Local Orone Track Feature Draws Big Crowd and Fast Horses

A heavy track at Orone Raceway Saturday hosted 24 horses across four two heat races. Just Van owned by Hon W Hodgson of Halibuttom won two firsts in the first race. Silk Elgin owned by Charles Fife of Peterborough also swept two firsts. Dr Cowie of Bowmanville rode Bruester Boy to a first and third in the third race. Hal Gratton Patch owned by Gordon and Hie of Cobourg placed first and second across his two heats. About two hundred spectators from across Ontario watched the events and prize coolers were awarded to race winners.

Urone High School Banquet Honors Victorious Wives

Urone High School held a banquet at the Arana United Church Sunday School Auditorium to honor the victorious wives after a Tiela day event. Students organized the dinner serving hot meals of scalloped potatoes vegetables ham and beverages. Marie Lewis, president of the Student Council, acted as toastmaster. Practically every student attended.

Orono Women's Institute Chronicle 1909 to 1934 Milestones

The Orono Branch of the Women’s Institute formed June 4 1909 with officers led by President Miss R A Walsh. It chronicles presidencies to 1921, membership fluctuations from 105 in 1925 to 22 in 1918 19 and peak 80 in 1929, and a record of programs lectures and demonstrations. It notes community service including park improvements Irish suppers and Red Cross support.

Ontario Baseball Championship Comes To Orono

Orono wins the Ontario Intermediate D championship at Campbellville after eight innings, beating Dashwood 11 to 6. Dashwood led early, but Orono's eight-run eighth inning sealed the title. J Hayter led Dashwood with three hits, while Keith West struck out five for Orono. The victory adds the Durham County title to Orono’s haul this year.

The October meeting of the Durham Junior Farmers was held October 22 at Orono Town Hall. Mary Aiken welcomed visitors from Brooklin and Barbara Redner from Belleville presented colour slides from a British Isles exchange. Banquet and dance set for November 26, 1954 at Newcastle Hall.

Major Anty Anderson to speak at Armistice Service

Major Anderson veteran of World Wars I and II will speak at the pre Armistice Day service at Qrono United Church Sunday evening at 7 30. Bowmanville Legion members and ex service personnel will attend the parade and wreath will be laid at the Cross of Remembrance with Last Post and Reveille played.

Leaman Couple Celebrates 40th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Wm Leaman celebrated forty years with a first day dinner hosted by S B Rutherford and family on October 28. Relatives and friends later gathered Sunday for a dinner at the couple’s home with chrysanthemums roses and a three tier cake. A purse of money was presented to the Leamens. Attendees included Mrs J Lee Emen Enterprise and many relatives from Oakville Brampton Milliken Scarborough Toronto and Enterprise.
