Hurricane Hazel swept rural and village areas causing uprooted trees torn roofs and broken hydro and telephone lines. Damage to St Saviours Anglican and Orono churches noted along with substantial loss to Spy Apple crop. Emergency crews restored power by afternoon with many lines still disrupted into the week.

Orono Women's Institute votes Friday to cease operations after years of service. Twenty four members attend the meeting where Mrs Victor Robinson proposed the motion and it passed by a majority. The institute supported the Orono Fair, public speaking prizes, and donated to the Memorial Hospital in Bowmanville. An interdenominational group, it once had 105 members and an average turnout of 20 to 24 in recent years. The decline is blamed on little interest from younger residents.

New Entrance Underway at Orono Armouries

Construction starts this week on a west side entrance at the Orono Armouries, recently purchased by the Orono Police Trustees. The addition will provide direct access to upper rooms via a new doorway and sidewalk from Park Street, avoiding the drill floor. Trustees plan to improve heating with oil.

Brownies Bake Sale and Tea Raises Community Support

The Brownies at Orono United Church held a bake sale and tea in the Sunday School Auditorium last Saturday. Despite town weather, a fine display of home baking sold quickly, with about 30 dollars cleared to support their work. leaders Mrs. Betty Chatterton and Miss Doreen White organized the event and served sandwiches cookies and tea.

New United Church Film Debuts in Orono This Friday

The United Church released a color documentary by Dr. Moorhouse titled Where None Shall Thirst. Aimed at depicting life in India and church missionary work, the 62 minute film premieres at Orono United Church this Friday at 8 PM with a silver collection.

Two Boys Try To Steal Car During Hurricane Hazel

During Hurricane Hazel on Friday evening three boys escaped from the Ontario Training School in Bowmanville. Two reached Orono and tried to steal Mr H M Mercer's car, getting it stuck at gas pumps before the owner confronted them. One boy was seized, another fled, the police later picked up the second boy north of the village. All three were returned to the school wearing wet clothes.

McGill's Bakery Installs Modern Oil Bake Oven

McGill's Bakery completed installation of a revolving oil bake oven over the weekend, replacing the coke oven. The new unit, half the size yet more efficient, speeds baking to an hour and allows moisture retention, with six revolving rack rows and a loading counter. Delivery resumed Tuesday after the changeover.

English Bishop Warde to Speak at St Saviours in Orono

The Right Reverend G. H. Warde Bishop of Lewes England will preach at St Saviour's Anglican Church Orono at 3 p.m. on Sunday October 31 during a North American visit. He will also appear in Perrytown and Bowmanville as part of his Canadian tour.
