Trustees To Seek Grant For Municipal Building

The Orono Police Trustees held their monthly meeting with full attendance. They turned down a petition to set store hours lacking 75 percent support and discussed Hallowe en debris cleanup. They approved tulip bulbs for planting, planned street work between Cobbledick and Somerville Drive, noted subdivision approval, and agreed to seek a government grant to fund a Municipal Building under Community Centre regulations.

Final Speaking Contest in Orono set for November 13

Meeting notes reveal dates for Public Speaking finals Clarke Township November 5 at Crooked Creek and Durham County November 18 at Orene Town Jail. The November Banquet moved to November 25 at 6 PM to avoid contest conflicts.

Double Ring Ceremony Unites Doreen Alldred Boyd Wood

Doreen Alldred and Boyd Douglas Wood united in a double ring wedding at Orono United Church on Saturday October 24. The ceremony featured Basil Long as minister, with music by Mrs. M H Staples and John Ford singing. The couple will reside in Orono after a honeymoon trip to the United States. Out of town guests came from Winnipeg Bronte Palermo Oshawa and Cobourg among others.

Oshawa WCTU Attends Orono Meeting Programs

The October Oshawa WCTU meeting in Orono drew strong attendance. Mrs Walsh welcomed guests as Dr Clayton Lee led a fine program with solos by Mrs Pegg and a report of Pembroke convention. The session closed after a missionary display and a benediction with lunch.

Orono children collect for UNICEF Halloween drive

Children in Orono will canvass after 6 30 pm Saturday for UNICEF funds. They receive boxes at the municipal building and return there for costume judging games and refreshments. Proceeds support UNICEF aid through the United Nations for hungry and distressed children.

Instal Mission Band Officers For 1966

The Mission Band met on Monday October 19 with fifty members. Mrs. McLaren installed officers: President Janice Rutherford Secretary Sharon Allin Treasurer Jarel Gilbank Program committee Carol Mercer Mo Nixon Marilyn Tamblyn World's Friends secretary Janice Rutherford. Junior leaders Sheila Kail and Deanna Challice ran crafts. special thanks to Connie Hovey and Toots Barraball. A second meeting followed on October 26 for a Junior Mission Gand with ten members.

Durham 4-H Teams Place Sixth in Guelph Competition

In the 4-H Annual Competition at Guelph on Friday October 28 268 teams from 11 488 Agricultural Project members competed. Durham County placed sixth overall with teams in Dairy Swine Grain and Tractor Maintenance led by Harold Yellowlees Lorne Tink Donald Welsh Grant Glaspell Marie Kent Bruce Stainton Fred Hoskin and Loran Pascoe under Glen Larmer and A O Dalrymple.

Girl Guides Halloween Party Features Costume Parade

Girl Guides held a Halloween party on Tuesday night at seven thirty. Anne Gilbank dressed as a tramp and Sheila Barraball as a flapper won prizes in the costume judging by Mrs Jack Watson. The event included games like bobbing for apples and a cookies and pop lunch.

Modern Raceway To Be Developed In Clarke

A 450 acre tract near Crono Clarke Township will be developed by Mos port Ltd for a new road racing park with plans echoing Donington Le Mans and the Nurburgring. The project includes a five year plan costing at least a quarter of a million dollars to open a short circuit by 1966 or early 1961 and may feature skiing, ice racing and a clubhouse with pool.

Orono Hydro Commission Holds Regular Meeting

The Orono Hydro Commission chaired by H. M. Mercer passed 2463.00 in accounts with power costs at 1347.43 and Workers' Compensation at 179.00. Manager Dent cited high rates and low funds after large capital expenditures and noted about 1800 invested in twelve rental water heaters. A portion of payments was deferred pending month end billing. a special meeting will be scheduled early next week.

High School Board seeks 810000 debentures for two new schools

The High School Board in Durham District seeks approval from the United Counties to issue 810000 in debentures to fund two new high schools, one in Darlington and one in Millbrook. Sites are under consideration as inspectors review water and sewage needs. Additional costs include courtice and millbrook facilities and 29 000 10 000 for architecture.

New Officers Elected To The Orono Amateur Athletic Association

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association held its annual meeting Tuesday in the Orono Hydro office with fifteen members present. H Lowes was chosen president for 1960, along with a new slate including Mrs H Barlow as 1st vice, John Ford secretary, Gordon Simpson treasurer, and directors such as Donald Jales Ji Gamsby Jack Moffat and S S Rutherford among others. The group praised past achievements and discussed summer programs for Bantams Juveniles PeeWees and Junior Girls, with a suggestion to form a baseball committee to manage the sport’s many tasks.
