Orono PeeWees Fall Short In Championship Bid

The Orono PeeWees lost 7 2 to Fenwick in the province final after a hard fought game. Crono, Yeo, Kennedy and Miller produced Orono’s key hits while Fenwick’s Beaver, Kennedy and Kennedy led the offense. Orono stranded six runners and exited Bronte with community support and a supper back home.

Local Horses Win at Peterborough Harness Races

Local trainer H. Heoey drove Gusapa to a first in one event and another heat win at Peterborough last Saturday. Worthy Melody owned by Junior West finished 2:05.2 at Blue Bonnet Raceway on Monday night to win its race. Agate and Greno were noted in races at Bambure with ownership linked to Mr. Lawrence Heopy.

Revive Grono Orphans Hockey Club Discusses Reform

A Tuesday meeting of about fifteen hockey players and enthusiasts explored reviving the Grono Orphan Hockey Club. Plans remain sketchy but a local club is possible with concrete steps due within two weeks.

On Monday evening October 19 Col. J. C. Gamey was surprised by sixteen past and present local post office staff in the living room. A retirement reception honored his 25 years as local postmaster with an engraved desk set tobacco pouch and pipe rack. He responded with a few appreciative remarks.

Orono Delegates Attend Guide Training Conference

The Central Area Training Conference at the Centre Bowmanville on Saturday October 17 1959 drew 115 Guiders and Local Association Members. Mrs E A Collins Oshawa Area Commissioner welcomed delegates and outlined nine divisions covering York Ontario Durham Northumberland Victoria and Haliburton Counties. The program included Area Council introductions a simulated meeting a Gold Card Challenge briefing a fashion show camping talks bookkeeping a question box and informal discussions hosted by Durham Division with coffee service.

Glacial Age Topic Highlighted At Evening Auxiliary Meet

The Evening Auxiliary gathered October 15 in the Sunday School Auditorium with president Margaret Arnott opening. Mr. Witherspoon spoke on the Glacial period in Canada and its link to mining and Great Lakes hydrology. Isobel Challice led devotions. a poetry reading and solos enriched the program. officers for next year were named by a three member nominating committee.

September Health Report on Rural Clinics and School Children

September health report details nursing visits and immunization efforts across rural schools in Darling d Alnwick area. Nurses logged 331 infant visits, 94 preschool health visits, 127 for school children, 50 home visits to disabled individuals, 3 mental health follow-ups, 18 communicable disease visits, 80 home care visits, and 28 prenatal home visits. A total of 398 nurse mother conferences occurred. immunization clinics and pediculosis checks were part of routine care. In 1958 59, over 14 000 elementary and 3 000 high school students attended United Counties schools. Sanitation work included a survey of 36 municipal dump sites, with 3 closed sites noted.

Blood pledge drive aims to meet Ontario hospital needs

Ontario seeks 200 000 annual blood pledges with 80 000 required in Toronto. Pledges must be spread over 12 months due to a three week shelf life for whole blood. Donors aged 18 to 65 may pledge, with tests for blood group and health at honor time. Heather Rebekah Officers Installed

The Heather Rebekah Ledge held its regular meeting October 13 with Sister Hattie Wilson presiding. New officers were installed by Sister Eva McMurter and staff, including Mildred Rainey as Noble Grand and Maude Cooper as Vice Grand. A follow up visit to Port Perry Maybelle Lodge occurred October 20.

Orono Girls Softball Club Plans Banquet and Jackets

The Orono girls softball team, league champions, held a meeting to plan a banquet at Orono Restaurant on October 23 and to discuss jackets or sweaters with crests. They hope local businessmen will finance the event and will pay for jerseys from a $15 league donation. twelve members attended, and the club has a $22.73 year end balance.

Darlington Plans for Fire Brigade May Be Too Costly

Darlington township council discussed volunteer fire protection at a special meeting. Officials favored multiple trucks at strategic points over a central station. George L. Totten to draft plans for a town garage at a $500 fee. Road spending eyed at $200 000 yearly over five years. Canadian Red Cross arranged a mobile blood donor clinic for November 4 at Lions Community Centre funded by free blood. Skating Club to suspend 1859 60 season due to ice costs and low registrations. fees to be refunded.
