Interesting program at Horticultural Society meeting

The Orono Horticultural Society held a long November meeting in the 1.0.C.F hall with Mrs Francis Jose presenting a travelogue of the British Isles and Mr Douglas Lycett delivering musical numbers. Mrs Fairbrother demonstrated holiday themed flower arrangements, President Mrs Carl Billings thanked volunteers, door prize winners were announced, and a social lunch followed with members sharing remarks.

Feeder Sale Sets Top Price At Durham Arena

Last Tuesday at the Durham Sales Arena in Orono over five hundred feeder cattle were auctioned in the sixth annual Durham Farmers’ Feeder Sale. McKenzie Canners of Colborne bought 73 head of steers at 24c, McLaughlin Farms of Oshawa took 65 head, and Old Orchard Farms of Peterboro sold Hereford steers at 25.75c to W. R. Cann of Campbellcroft. Buyers came from Woodstock to Colborne.

Orono Guides and Scouts Lead Blind Institute Drive

Orono Girl Guides and Boy Scouts canvassed the village on Thursday evening to support the Canadian Institute for the Blind. Leaders supervised the campaign, and the group collected 128 655 dollars, the largest local total in years.

Bowmanville Tops Orono in Mixed Doubles Badminton Night

Bowmanville club won all honours in a tournament with 16 Bowmanville and 16 Orono players. Elva Reid and Donna Forrester were the only Orono pair to win a set. Orono hosts a return match in Bowmanville next Wednesday November 11.

Professor C B Sissons of Clarke Pewrship presented his new book The Church and State in Canadian Education and Historical Study detailing church state roles across Canada. The work, years in the making, surveys Education clauses in the British North America Act and provincial applications.

Reason For Living by Walter R. Dent

Walter R. Dent formerly of Clarke Township publishes Reason For Living arguing modern man fights to maintain identity. He links freedom of thought to God believing democracy and criticizes religious and philosophical leaders. Dent’s career spans WWI novels, journalism, and radio.

Canada to Donate Two Million Dollars to UN Fund

Dr. ER P Vivian, Canada's UN delegate, announced to the 1959 United Nations pledging conference that Ottawa will contribute two million dollars to the UN special fund for 1960, subject to Parliament approval. He stressed Canada’s strong support for UN programmes aiding less-developed regions and continued funding for the expanded programme of technical assistance.

Girl Guides Hold Evening Meeting With New Recruit

Tuesday night at 7 30 the Guide meeting began with inspection and roll call. Margie Taylor joined as a new recruit. Guides organized patrols collected funds and introduced tenderfoot notes. Older girls began a special course while others painted paper mache animals and played games. The meeting ended with singing, prayer and taps.

The Orono courts will host a night of instruction soon. Everyone is welcome to join as the Orono Club seeks more players and members. Tre more, the merrier.

Children Parade for UNICEF Funds and Local Officers

Clarke Township annual meeting elected officers by acclamation led by Hartwell Lowery as president. In Orono children toured homes in costumes for UNICEF, collected pennies in boxes, and raised 31 dollars at the Municipal Building with prizes awarded for costumes.

Clarke Township Council Considers Road, Hall Move

Clarke Township Council met with Deputy reeve H E Walley and councilors Dent Stone Lavery and Reeve Brown in attendance. They criticized the Kendal to Kirby road condition and discussed a CPR siding proposal at Lots 22 and 28. A petition urged building a hard surfaced road from the Gope Clarke boundary to the Cloverleaf on 401 Newcastle. Oddfellows Hall may become a Community Hall with a $5000 grant, requiring three Orono Lodge members on a new management committee.

Hard Times Dance For Hi-Teens At Town Hall

The Hi-Teens host a Hard Times dance this Saturday at Town Hall at 8 30 p.m. Admission is 50 cents with costumes encouraged as no excuses for looking prosperous. The Orono United Church Teenagers, led by Rev Basil Long, also announce their calendar sale for 1960 to support activities.

Bowmanville Bride Marries Lloyd Lowery in Presbyterian Church

The ceremony for Darla Marlene Coyle and Lloyd Bedford Lowery took place Saturday at 3 in Bowmanville Presbyterian Church. The bride wore a lace gown with a floor train, veil pearls, and carried pink roses. attendants wore pale blue gowns. A reception followed at Memorial Park Club House with gifts from family and coworkers.
