Seven Compete In The W C T U Silver Medal Contest

A W C T U Silver Medal Contest at United Church basement on Friday evening drew many attendees. Patsy Finn won the girls medal with three competitors. Bill Boyd won the boys medal among four contenders. Mr A J Knox chaired, urging constant temperance work and noting the W C T U’s 50 years in Orono.

Mrs Honeywell Rites Held For Orono Resident

Nancy McChesney Honeywell widow of John A. Honeywell died after a brief illness at her Orono home on October 28 1938 aged 75. She was born 1863 at Crooked Creek daughter of Mr and Mrs McChesney and had lived in Rochester and Toronto before moving to Orono about twenty years ago. Funeral from F F Morris Undertaking Parlour Bowery was held October 25 at 3 30 p m with Rev S Littlewood officiating. Interment Newtonville family plot. Pallbearers listed and floral tributes from local organizations and friends.

A Y P A Meeting Social Evening Recitals at St Saviour's

A Y P A of St Saviour's Anglican Church held a social evening last Thursday featuring Chrissy Jordan, Glenn Tamblyn, a vocal duet by Mr and Mrs R Smith with piano by Myrtle Smith, violin by Don and Vernon Graham, and multiple solos duets and readings. Edwin Manning chaired, and generous church refreshments followed the program.

Life Membership Award at Newtonville Women’s Institute

Mrs. M. J. Holman received a Life Membership Certificate and Pin at the Newtonville Women’s Institute meeting in the United Church basement on October 20. Guest speaker Mrs. Hoock discussed “Ourselves” as members enjoyed programs and plan a visit to Tyrone Branch on November 2. Five others, including Mrs. Hancock, presided earlier in the program.

Orono Electric System Debentures Authorized by Clarke Township

Clarke Township approves purchase of the Orono Electric System for 8198.40 plus capital costs since Oct 31 1987 and authorizes issuing 8000 debentures at 4 8 percent interest, repayable in ten annual installments from system revenue with annual rate levies if needed.

A sale agreement covers the Orono Electric System including the distribution business and related contracts in the Police Village of Orono and adjacent switches south of Orono. The deal excludes a Newcastle Rural Power District primary circuit on Main Street and certain poles. Price set at 8,128.40 dollars plus post Oct 31 1987 capital costs. debentures offered by Clarke Township are 8,000 dollars at 4.84 percent, with prepayment options on May 1 or November 1.

Orono By-law 1031 Election on Hydro Power Supply

The Police Village of Orono votes on borrowing 8000 for purchasing the electrical distribution system from the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario. Polling is Nov 5 1938 from 9am to 6pm at the Fire Hall with C F Awde as D R O and Mrs Clara Tarrigon as the Pell Clerk. Official count set for Nov 9 1938 at 8pm in the Council Chamber.

Clarke Township bylaw notices authorize purchase and vote

Notice from Albert J. Staples Clerk certifying true synopses of By laws 1080 and 1081 to authorize the Orone Electric System purchase and to submit the question to electors. It states bylaw 1030, passed in October 1938, will be reconsidered after one month. Qualified tenants must file vote declarations by November 5, 1938.

Women's Institute Donates to Public School Work

A Cobourg Supreme Court jury found Jack Elliott not guilty of manslaughter over the March 30 accident near Newtonville. A verdict of not guilty on grievous bodily harm was also returned. The crash at the Clarke Township railway bridge left Harold Thompson dead.

Installation of Officers at Orone Lodge No 436

The Orone Lodge No 436 installation occurred last Wednesday night in the Lodge Room with District Deputy Grand Master Wm F Smith and staff from Durham Lodge 78 officiating. Visitors from Florence Nightingale Lodge Bowmanville Cobourg Lodge Pontypool Lodge attended and a banquet followed with speeches from D D G M Smith and others. Rosborough discuss farm land needs at Orono Women’s Institute

At a November Orono Women’s Institute meeting Mrs. O W Rolph introduced two new locals Miss Williams and Mrs Payne.
