Millbrook Wins Shield Over Orono at Friday Field Meet

In favorable weather Millbrook clinched the shield with 212 points to Orono's 188. Dick Morton led Orono with five firsts and two thirds, while Jim Powers topped the meet with five firsts and two seconds. Orono also defeated Millbrook 9 to 3 in a three inning mixed softball game.

Mrs Alice Mary Jackson of Peterboro Dies at 70

Mrs. Alice Mary Jackson widow of the late Robert Jackson of Kendal died at 186 Stewart Street Peterboro on Tuesday October 4 in her 70th year after a short illness. She leaves three daughters Mrs L E Thornton Toronto Mrs B D Hinskill Peterboro and Elva at home two sisters Mrs Robert Payne Pontypool and Mrs J C Elliott Peterboro one brother Hugh Hanna Saskatoon. Funeral Thursday October 6 at 2 pm from the residence to Little Lake Cemetery conducted by Rev George S Easton of Trinity United Church.

Junior Farmers Judging Contest Celebrated in Orono

Seventeen seniors and twenty five juniors participated in a record setting Junior Farmers Judging Contest in Orono. Elmore Scott won top honors with 943 points and the C M Shield went to Norman Bairstow. Three coaching teams trained new competitors. results listed for three top junior teams led by John Rickard and Garnet Rickard.

Orono Debenture Plan for Electric System Purchase

Clarke township council approves purchase of the Orono Electric System under Exhibit A for 8128.40 plus capital costs since 1987 debentures totalling 8000 issued at 4.3 percent with ten annual installments. First payment 1989 last 1948 with interest due May 1 and November 1 each year. Payments funded by Orono Electric System revenues or special rate if needed.

The Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario agrees to purchase the Orono Electric System and related contracts in the Police Village of Orono excluding specified Newcastle Rural Power District portions. The price is 8198.40 with additional capital costs since Oct 31 1987. Debentures of Clarke Township valued at 8000 are accepted at 4.84 percent per year with prepayment on May 1 or November 1.

Orono By-law to borrow for hydro power purchase

By law 1031 proposes to submit to Orono electors the purchase of the hydro electricity distribution system and an $8,000 loan to secure power from the Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario. Voting set for November 1938 at the Orono Fire Hall with scrutineers named and an official count planned on November 9 at 8 pm.

Orono Hydro System Shows Long Record of Profits and Growth

The hydro electric system in Orono expanded from 188 subscribers in 1918 to 295 in 1987 with rising revenue. From 1982 to 1937 the Ontario commission paid operating costs and earned a profit of 10650.34 dollars, suggesting purchase in 1932 would have paid off debt. a 1935 vote against buying left taxpayers bearing higher rates.

Badminton Club Opens With Social Evening in Orono

The Orono Garrison Badminton Club held its official opening on Friday the 14th with a decorated room and floral centerpieces from Mrs. J. Cr Gamey and Mrs. Chas Knox. Notables including Dr. McKenzie, Rev. and Mrs. Littlewood, and others attended. A business meeting elected Major J. O. Gamey as president and Mrs. O. W. Rolph as widow president for 1939, with Miss Marjorie Adams as secretary.
